Documentation

Enter your monthly expenses across eight spending categories to see a full breakdown of where your money goes. Each field accepts decimals, fractions (such as 3/4), mixed numbers (such as 1 1/2), and values with currency symbols or commas, which are stripped automatically before calculation.

  • Fill in the Housing fields with your monthly rent or mortgage payment, property tax contribution, and home insurance premium.
  • Enter Utilities costs for electricity, water, heating gas, internet, and phone service.
  • Add Food spending split between groceries and dining out.
  • Record Transportation expenses including any car payment, fuel, auto insurance, and public transit passes or fares.
  • Input Healthcare costs for health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket medical expenses.
  • List Personal spending on clothing, entertainment, and personal care items.
  • Enter Debt and Savings amounts for loan payments, retirement contributions, and emergency fund deposits.
  • Add any Other recurring costs such as childcare, pet care, or miscellaneous expenses.
  • Click Calculate to generate your results, or wait for the auto-calculation that triggers after you stop typing.
  • Open Settings to change the currency symbol or enter your annual gross income. When income is provided, the results include a savings rate and remaining balance after expenses.
  • Click Reset to clear all fields and saved data, restoring every input to its default empty state.

Leave any field blank or at zero if a category does not apply. The calculator treats empty fields as zero and still produces accurate totals. All entered values persist in your browser between visits, so you do not need to re-enter data each time you return.

Tracking monthly expenses by category reveals spending patterns that lump-sum budgets obscure. The percentage breakdown highlights which categories consume the largest share of income and where adjustments would have the greatest impact.

  • Relocation planning: Enter projected expenses for a new city alongside current costs in a separate browser tab to compare total monthly outlays side by side before deciding on a move.
  • Retirement readiness: Input expected post-retirement expenses, remove work-related costs like commuting and professional clothing, and compare the annual total against projected retirement income to assess coverage.
  • Household budgeting: Record actual monthly spending for two or three months, average the values, and identify categories where spending exceeds your target allocation.
  • Salary negotiation: Enter your annual gross income in Settings and review the savings rate. If the rate falls below your target after covering all expenses, quantify the gap to support a raise request with concrete numbers.
  • Debt reduction strategy: Isolate discretionary categories like dining out, entertainment, and clothing to calculate how much could be redirected toward accelerating debt payments each month.
  • Student budget planning: Focus on the categories relevant to student life, such as rent, groceries, phone, internet, and public transit, to build a realistic monthly budget before the semester starts.
  • Financial check-in: Revisit the calculator quarterly, update values to reflect current spending, and track whether total expenses are trending up or down relative to income over time.
