Documentation

A food cost calculator breaks a recipe down ingredient by ingredient to show what each one contributes to the total cost. It converts between weight and volume units, applies a waste factor and sales tax, and derives a suggested selling price from a target food cost percentage.

  • Each ingredient carries a name, a purchase price for the package bought (fractions such as 1/2, mixed numbers such as 2 1/4, decimals, and dollar signs are all accepted), a package size with its unit (oz, lb, kg, g, each, gallon, liter, ml, or cup), and the amount used in the recipe with its own unit.
  • When the amount unit differs from the package unit, conversion happens automatically within compatible groups: weight to weight, or volume to volume.
  • Number of servings sets the recipe yield that per-serving cost is divided across.
  • Settings holds the Waste Factor (the percentage of an ingredient lost to trimming, peeling, or spoilage), Sales Tax (applied to the subtotal), and Target Food Cost (the percentage of the menu price ingredients are meant to represent).
  • Results show total recipe cost, cost per serving, and a suggested menu price derived from the target food cost percentage.
  • A step-by-step breakdown, available in Settings, shows per-ingredient unit cost, waste-adjusted cost, and the full derivation for every line item.

Accurate food costing applies across home kitchens, professional restaurants, catering operations, and food manufacturing. Knowing the per-serving cost of every dish drives better purchasing decisions and pricing strategies.

  • Restaurant Menu Pricing: Enter all ingredients for a signature dish, set the target food cost to 28%, and derive the minimum menu price that maintains profitability. Adjust waste factor for items with high trim loss like whole fish or artichokes.
  • Catering Bids: Scale a recipe to 200 servings, add tax, and quote an accurate per-plate cost to clients. Compare costs across ingredient substitutions by swapping rows and recalculating.
  • Home Meal Planning: Track weekly grocery spending by entering ingredient costs for planned meals. Divide the total by the number of servings across all meals to find the average cost per plate for the household.
  • Food Truck Operations: Evaluate whether a new menu item fits within margin targets before committing to ingredient orders. Factor in a 5% to 10% waste allowance for items prepared in outdoor conditions.
  • Bakery Production: Price layered cakes and pastries by listing flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and specialty ingredients with exact gram measurements. Convert between imperial and metric units without manual math.
  • Meal Prep Services: Calculate cost per container for subscription meal kits. Adjust servings to match container counts and verify that bulk purchasing discounts reduce the per-serving figure enough to hit target margins.
  • Cooking Classes: Estimate material costs per student by dividing recipe costs across the class size. Determine how many students are needed to cover ingredient expenses at a given enrollment fee.
