A gas and fuel cost calculator converts trip distance, vehicle fuel efficiency, and the local price of fuel into how much fuel a trip needs and what it costs. It handles both imperial and metric unit systems, converting between them automatically.

  • Trip distance accepts fractions (such as 3/4), mixed numbers (such as 5 1/2), and decimals, in either miles or kilometers.
  • Fuel efficiency is entered as Miles per Gallon (MPG, typically 15 to 50 for most vehicles), Liters per 100 km, or Kilometers per Liter; the calculator converts internally regardless of which unit is used.
  • Fuel price is entered per gallon or per liter, matching the price posted at the local station; dollar signs and commas are stripped automatically.
  • A return-trip option doubles the distance, pricing a round trip instead of a one-way leg.
  • Settings holds decimal precision, the currency symbol, and a step-by-step view of how each value is derived.
  • Results report total fuel needed, total cost, and cost per distance unit.

The core formula is: Fuel Needed = Distance / Efficiency (converted to a common base), and Total Cost = Fuel Needed x Price per Unit. When distance and efficiency use different unit systems, conversion factors are applied first: 1 mile = 1.60934 km, 1 gallon = 3.78541 liters.

Fuel cost estimation applies to a wide range of scenarios, from daily commutes to cross-country road trips. Below are specific situations where knowing the exact fuel expense in advance saves time and money.

  • Road Trip Budgeting: Plan a 1,200-mile vacation drive at 25 MPG with gas at $3.45 per gallon to determine that you will need 48 gallons costing $165.60 one way, or $331.20 round trip.
  • Daily Commute Costs: Multiply a 30-mile round-trip commute by 20 workdays to find monthly fuel spending and compare it against public transit passes or carpooling.
  • Fleet Management: Estimate weekly fuel budgets for delivery vehicles by entering average route distance and known fleet MPG to allocate operating funds accurately.
  • Vehicle Comparison: Compare the annual fuel cost of a 22 MPG SUV versus a 45 MPG hybrid over 15,000 miles to quantify how much a more efficient vehicle saves each year.
  • International Travel: Switch to kilometers, liters per 100 km, and per-liter pricing to plan driving costs in Europe or South America without manual conversion errors.
  • Rideshare and Delivery Drivers: Track per-trip fuel costs to verify that earnings exceed expenses and identify routes or times of day that maximize net income.
  • Moving and Relocation: Estimate the fuel cost of driving a rental truck rated at 10 MPG over a 500-mile move to include in the total relocation budget.
  • Carpooling Cost Splits: Divide the total fuel cost among passengers to determine each person's fair share for a group trip.
  • Price Shopping Across Stations: Run the same trip distance and vehicle efficiency at two nearby fuel prices to see the dollar difference a few cents per gallon makes over a long drive before deciding where to fill up.
