Documentation

Layaway plans let you reserve an item and pay for it over time before taking it home. The per-payment amount, full payment schedule, and all applicable fees are determined from the item price, down payment, and chosen installment count. Enter your item details and payment preferences to see an itemized breakdown of every installment.

  • Enter the full retail price of the item in the Item Price field. Accepted formats include decimals (299.99), fractions (3/4), and values with dollar signs or commas ($1,299.00).
  • Specify a Down Payment amount or percentage. Select Dollar Amount from the Down Payment Type dropdown to enter a fixed sum, or select Percentage to calculate the down payment as a share of the item price. A down payment of zero is valid.
  • Set the Number of Payments to control how many installments cover the remaining balance. Common layaway plans range from 4 to 12 payments.
  • Choose a Payment Frequency of weekly, biweekly, or monthly to match your budgeting cycle.
  • Open Settings to add a one-time Layaway Fee that some retailers charge when opening a plan. Add a recurring Service Fee per Payment if the store applies a handling charge to each installment.
  • Click Calculate or wait for the automatic calculation after entering values. The results section displays the computed down payment, remaining balance, per-payment amount, total fees, total cost, and a full payment schedule table.
  • The payment schedule table lists each installment number, the payment amount (including any per-payment service fee), and the remaining balance after that payment.
  • Click Reset to clear all entries and restore default values. All inputs persist in your browser between visits so you can return to adjust your plan.

The core formula divides the remaining balance (item price minus down payment) evenly across the chosen number of payments. Per-payment amount = remaining balance / number of payments + service fee per payment. Total cost = item price + one-time layaway fee + (service fee per payment x number of payments).

Layaway plans remain a popular payment option at major retailers, electronics stores, and furniture shops. Planning your installments in advance helps you budget accurately and avoid surprises at pickup time.

  • Holiday Shopping: Reserve gifts months in advance and spread the cost across biweekly paychecks. Enter a $500 electronics bundle with 10% down and 8 biweekly payments to confirm each installment fits your budget.
  • Furniture Purchases: Large items like sofas or mattresses often qualify for in-store layaway. Compare a 6-payment monthly plan against a 12-payment plan to see how each schedule affects your monthly cash flow.
  • Back-to-School Preparation: Parents can budget for clothing, supplies, and electronics by entering the combined total and splitting it across weekly payments during the summer.
  • Retailer Fee Comparison: Some stores charge a $5 layaway fee while others charge $10 plus a $1 per-payment service fee. Enter both fee structures to compare total costs and pick the more affordable option.
  • Jewelry and Special Occasions: Reserve an engagement ring or anniversary gift with a small down payment. Adjust the number of payments to find a comfortable installment size that does not strain your monthly budget.
  • Electronics and Appliances: Hold a new laptop or refrigerator on layaway during a sale. Lock in the sale price and pay it off over 4 to 8 installments without interest charges.
  • Budget Verification: Before committing to a layaway plan, enter the exact terms the retailer offers and verify that the per-payment amount aligns with your available discretionary income each pay period.
