Documentation

A moving cost calculator itemizes the expenses of a relocation, combining labor, transportation, storage, and incidental costs into a single estimate adjusted for tax and tip.

  • A move is categorized as local, long distance, or cross country based on distance, the actual mileage between the current and future home.
  • Labor and time estimates scale with home size, from a studio up through larger homes.
  • A move can be fully do-it-yourself, hired labor only, or handled by a full-service moving company, and the method determines which cost fields apply.
  • Labor cost = number of movers x hourly rate per mover x estimated hours.
  • Truck rental cost, packing supplies, and insurance each pass directly into the total as entered.
  • Storage expense, when needed, is monthly storage cost x number of months.
  • Any number of additional line items, such as cleaning fees, pet transport, or specialty item handling, can be added, each with its own name and dollar amount.
  • Settings holds the tax rate and tip percentage. Tip applies to labor cost only; tax applies to the subtotal before tip is added.
  • All numeric fields accept decimals, fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (1 1/2).

Two movers at $30 an hour for 4 hours gives a labor cost of 2 x 30 x 4 = $240. Adding a $150 truck rental and two months of $50 storage ($100) brings the subtotal to $490. An 8% tax on that subtotal adds $39.20, and a 15% tip on the labor cost alone adds $36.00, for a total of $565.20.

Plan and budget for moves of any scale by adjusting inputs to match a specific situation. The itemized breakdown reveals where the largest expenses fall, making it straightforward to compare options and find savings.

  • Local apartment move: Set move type to local, enter a short distance, select studio or 1 bedroom, and compare DIY truck rental against hiring two movers for three hours to see which option fits the budget.
  • Cross-country family relocation: Select cross country, enter the full mileage, choose 3 or 4 bedroom, and use full-service method. Additional costs for auto transport, temporary housing, and utility setup fees complete the picture for a cross-country relocation.
  • College move-in or move-out: Select a studio or 1 bedroom with the DIY method. A low hourly rate reflects a friend helping out, and packing supplies plus a small truck rental round out a budget-friendly move estimate.
  • Comparing moving companies: Run the calculator multiple times with different hourly rates and mover counts to see how quotes from competing companies affect the total. The tip percentage in settings accounts for gratuity differences between quotes.
  • Corporate relocation budgeting: Enter full-service rates for a large home and include storage for overlap periods between lease dates. Rows for cleaning deposits, key replacements, and moving insurance complete an expense report suitable for reimbursement.
  • Downsizing to a smaller home: Compare a hybrid move (hiring labor to load and unload while driving the truck independently) against full service. Reduce estimated hours to reflect a smaller load and see how the labor savings offset the truck rental cost.
  • Seasonal cost planning: Adjust hourly rates to reflect peak-season pricing (summer months) versus off-peak rates (winter) to decide the most cost-effective time to schedule a move.
