Liquidity ratios measure a company's ability to meet short-term obligations from balance sheet figures: current assets, cash and cash equivalents, short-term investments, accounts receivable, inventory, current liabilities, and operating cash flow. All figures accept decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, and scientific notation; dollar signs, commas, and percentage symbols are stripped automatically before parsing.

Current assets are all assets expected to convert to cash within one year, and drive the current ratio and net working capital. Cash and cash equivalents (bank balances, money market funds, Treasury bills) and short-term investments (marketable securities and other quickly liquidated holdings) both feed the quick ratio and cash ratio. Accounts receivable, amounts owed by customers, adds to cash and short-term investments in the quick ratio to measure near-liquid coverage. Inventory counts toward current assets but is excluded from the quick ratio, since it may not convert to cash quickly. Current liabilities, all obligations due within one year, are the denominator of every ratio and must be greater than zero for a valid result. Operating cash flow, net cash generated from core business operations and typically found on the cash flow statement, is divided by current liabilities for the operating cash flow ratio.

Current Ratio = Current Assets / Current Liabilities. Quick Ratio = (Cash and Cash Equivalents + Short-term Investments + Accounts Receivable) / Current Liabilities. Cash Ratio = (Cash and Cash Equivalents + Short-term Investments) / Current Liabilities. Net Working Capital = Current Assets - Current Liabilities. Operating Cash Flow Ratio = Operating Cash Flow / Current Liabilities.

A balance sheet showing $500,000 in current assets, $150,000 in cash and equivalents, $50,000 in short-term investments, $100,000 in accounts receivable, $200,000 in inventory, $250,000 in current liabilities, and $75,000 in operating cash flow produces: Current Ratio = 500,000 / 250,000 = 2.0; Quick Ratio = (150,000 + 50,000 + 100,000) / 250,000 = 1.2; Cash Ratio = (150,000 + 50,000) / 250,000 = 0.8; Net Working Capital = 500,000 - 250,000 = $250,000; and Operating Cash Flow Ratio = 75,000 / 250,000 = 0.3.

Liquidity ratio analysis applies across industries and organizational sizes whenever stakeholders need to evaluate short-term financial health. The five ratios computed here each reveal a different layer of liquidity, from the broadest measure of current assets against current liabilities down to the most conservative cash-only view.

  • Credit Analysis: Lenders reviewing a loan application enter the applicant's balance sheet figures to determine whether current assets provide adequate coverage of short-term debt. A current ratio below 1.0 signals potential difficulty meeting upcoming obligations.
