Documentation
A marketplace profit calculator computes net earnings after platform fees, production costs, and shipping expenses, with fee structures pre-configured for five major marketplaces: Etsy, Amazon, eBay, Shopify, and Walmart.
Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee plus a 6.5% transaction fee and payment processing, with an optional 15% offsite ads fee on sales it drives. Amazon charges a 15% referral fee plus a per-item fee. eBay charges a 13.25% final value fee plus a $0.30 per-order surcharge. Shopify charges only payment processing fees and no marketplace commission, since it is a seller's own store rather than a marketplace.
Sale price is the amount the customer pays for the item before shipping. Shipping charged is the shipping fee the customer pays at checkout; some marketplaces apply transaction fees to this amount as well. Material and item cost covers raw materials, production, packaging, and any other cost to create or source the product. Actual shipping cost is what is paid for the shipping label or courier service. An offsite or promoted ads fee, when the sale resulted from a marketplace advertising program, applies at a percentage that varies by platform.
Results show net profit, profit margin percentage, and a fee-by-fee breakdown. Any default fee rate can be overridden with an exact value, and a step-by-step view shows the math behind each fee calculation. All numeric fields accept decimal values (12.50), fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (5 1/2); dollar signs and commas are stripped automatically.
Comparing profitability across multiple selling platforms clarifies where to list products for the strongest return, since the true cost of doing business varies sharply by marketplace.
- Etsy Sellers: Handmade goods profit accounts for the $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, payment processing, and optional 15% offsite ads fee to reveal the true per-item earnings.
- Amazon Sellers: Net profit after the 15% referral fee and per-item fee shows whether Fulfillment by Amazon or self-shipping produces better margins on a given product.
- eBay Resellers: The 13.25% final value fee plus the $0.30 per-order surcharge factor into pricing items competitively while maintaining a healthy profit margin on each sale.
- Shopify Store Owners: Since Shopify charges only payment processing fees and no marketplace commission, comparing the result against third-party marketplaces shows how much more profit a Shopify store retains.
- Multi-Channel Sellers: The same product details entered across all five marketplaces show net profit side by side, identifying the most profitable platform for each product category.
- Pricing Strategy: Working backward from a target profit margin means adjusting the sale price until it reaches the desired earnings after all fees and costs are deducted.
- New Sellers: Seeing exactly how much each marketplace takes from a hypothetical sale at various price points lays out the full fee landscape before committing to a platform.
- Wholesale and Bulk: Evaluating whether bulk purchasing at lower material costs produces sufficient margin improvement justifies larger inventory investments on a preferred selling platform.
