Enter the original price of an item and the discount percentage to find the reduced sale price, the dollar amount saved, and an optional post-tax total. All numeric fields accept decimals, fractions such as 3/4, mixed numbers such as 5 1/2, and values with commas or dollar signs, which are stripped automatically before calculation.

  • Type the item cost into the Original Price ($) field. Include or omit the dollar sign and commas as you prefer.
  • Enter the discount in the Discount Percentage (%) field. A value of 25 means a 25% discount off the original price.
  • Press Calculate to display the discount amount, sale price, and total savings. Results also update automatically after a short pause when you stop typing.
  • To include sales tax in the result, click Settings to open the settings panel and enter a value in the Tax Rate (%) field. The calculator then shows the tax amount and the final price after tax.
  • Enable the Show step-by-step breakdown checkbox inside the settings panel to reveal the formulas behind each result: the symbolic formula, the substitution with your values, and the computed answer.
  • Press Reset to clear all fields, remove saved data, and return every input to its default value of zero.
  • The core formulas are straightforward. Discount Amount equals Original Price multiplied by the Discount Percentage divided by 100. Sale Price equals Original Price minus Discount Amount. When a tax rate is provided, Tax Amount equals Sale Price multiplied by Tax Rate divided by 100, and Final Price equals Sale Price plus Tax Amount.
  • All inputs and settings persist between visits through your browser local storage, so your values reappear when you return to the page.

Discount calculations apply across retail, wholesale, and personal budgeting contexts. Below are specific scenarios where the sale price calculator provides immediate value.

  • Retail Shopping: Compare advertised discounts across stores by entering each item original price and the posted discount percentage to see the actual dollar savings side by side.
  • E-commerce Pricing: Set promotional prices for an online storefront by computing the exact sale price from a chosen markdown percentage, then factor in the applicable sales tax to confirm the checkout total matches expectations.
  • Wholesale Ordering: Apply volume discount tiers to bulk purchase prices. Enter the list price and the negotiated percentage reduction to verify the per-unit cost before committing to a purchase order.
  • Budget Planning: Determine the final out-of-pocket cost of a big-ticket item during a seasonal sale. Add the local tax rate in settings to see the complete post-tax price and the net savings against the full retail amount.
  • Classroom Instruction: Walk students through percentage-based arithmetic by enabling the step-by-step breakdown, which shows the symbolic formula, value substitution, and final result for each stage of the calculation.
  • Coupon Stacking Analysis: Enter the price after one coupon as the original price, then apply a second coupon percentage to see the compounded discount. Repeat the process for each additional coupon layer to find the cumulative savings.
  • Inventory Clearance: Liquidate slow-moving stock by testing different markdown levels. Adjust the discount percentage to find the lowest sale price that still covers cost, then confirm the post-tax revenue per unit.
  • Real Estate Negotiation: Model a percentage reduction on an asking price to arrive at an offer amount and see how much below list price the offer sits in absolute dollars.
