Tariff Calculatorv1.0.0
Compute import tariffs, dutiable values, and total landed costs for one or more products using custom or preset tariff rates. Historical scenario presets covering US baseline, US-China trade war, Smoot-Hawley, EU common external, US reciprocal 2025, and UK post-Brexit rates model duty exposure across trade regimes.

Documentation
Enter one or more products with their declared values, quantities, and applicable tariff rates to compute the import duty, dutiable value, and total landed cost for each line item and the shipment as a whole. All numeric fields accept decimals, fractions such as 3/4, mixed numbers such as 5 1/2, and values with commas or dollar signs, which are stripped automatically before calculation.
- Select a Tariff Scenario from the dropdown to apply a historical or regional tariff rate to all products at once. Choose "Custom" to enter individual rates per product. Available presets include US Baseline 2024 at an average 3.4%, US-China Trade War 2018-2019 at 25%, US Reciprocal Tariffs 2025 at a representative 10-50% range, Smoot-Hawley 1930 at an average 20%, EU Common External Tariff at 5.1%, and UK Global Tariff Post-Brexit at 5.7%.
- Pick a Currency to set the symbol displayed in all output values. Supported currencies include USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, and CNY.
- Enter a product description in the Product Name field for each row. Type the item value in Declared Value and adjust Quantity as needed. Set the Tariff Rate (%) individually or let the scenario preset fill it in.
- Press Add Product to insert additional rows for multi-product shipments. Each row has its own Remove button to delete it from the list.
- Click Settings to open the settings panel. Choose between FOB and CIF valuation methods. Under CIF, freight and insurance are added to the dutiable value before the tariff rate is applied. Enter an Insurance Rate (%) based on the declared value, a flat Freight / Shipping Cost, and a flat Handling / Brokerage Fee that is added after the tariff calculation.
- Enable Show step-by-step breakdown in the settings panel to reveal the formulas and substituted values behind every result line.
- Press Calculate to generate results, or wait briefly after typing for automatic recalculation. Press Reset to clear all data, remove saved state, and restore defaults.
- The core formulas work as follows. Under FOB valuation, the dutiable value equals the declared value multiplied by quantity. Under CIF valuation, the dutiable value equals the declared value multiplied by quantity, plus freight cost, plus the insurance amount (declared value times quantity times insurance rate divided by 100). The tariff amount for each product equals the dutiable value multiplied by the tariff rate divided by 100. The landed cost per product equals the dutiable value plus the tariff amount plus the handling fee divided across products. The summary shows the combined totals across all products, along with the effective tariff rate as a percentage of total declared value.
Import duty calculations affect procurement decisions, pricing strategies, and supply chain planning across industries and trade corridors. Below are specific scenarios where tariff modeling provides actionable cost visibility.
- Procurement Planning: Compare landed costs of sourcing the same component from two countries with different tariff rates. Enter both products with their respective rates to see which origin delivers a lower total cost after duties, freight, and insurance.
- Trade Policy Analysis: Model the cost impact of proposed tariff changes by switching between scenario presets. Toggle from the US Baseline 2024 preset to the US-China Trade War preset to quantify how a rate increase from 3.4% to 25% affects a product line worth several hundred thousand in declared value.
- Customs Brokerage: Enter a multi-product commercial invoice with varying tariff classifications and rates. Review the per-item duty breakdown and the shipment-level summary to prepare customs declarations and verify broker invoices against independently calculated figures.
- E-commerce Import Costing: Estimate the total landed cost of overseas inventory purchases before placing an order. Enter product values, shipping fees, and the applicable tariff rate to determine the true per-unit cost that must be recovered through retail pricing.
- Academic Research: Study historical trade regimes by loading the Smoot-Hawley 1930 preset alongside the modern US Baseline. Apply both to the same basket of goods to illustrate how effective tariff rates have shifted over time.
- Supply Chain Diversification: Evaluate the financial incentive to shift manufacturing from a high-tariff origin to a lower-tariff one. Enter identical products under two rows with different tariff rates reflecting two sourcing countries and compare the resulting landed costs.
