Enter a total amount and a total quantity to find how much of the amount corresponds to exactly one unit of the quantity. Label both sides with any term that fits the scenario, such as dollars and gallons, calories and servings, or miles and hours. Add multiple rows to compare rates across different items or scenarios and identify the lowest or highest rate at a glance.

  • Type a short description into the Item Name field to identify each entry. The name is optional but helpful when comparing several rows.
  • Enter the Total Amount for the item. Accepted formats include decimals (12.50), fractions (25/2), mixed numbers (12 1/2), values with dollar signs ($12.50), values with commas (1,250.00), and scientific notation (1.25e1).
  • Type a label into the Amount Label field to describe what the amount measures. The default is "dollars" but any term works: calories, miles, words, liters, or points.
  • Enter the Total Quantity in the same flexible formats: decimals, fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (5 1/2), or scientific notation (2e3).
  • Type a label into the Quantity Label field to describe the unit of quantity. The default is "items" but common alternatives include gallons, hours, minutes, servings, or pages.
  • Click Calculate or wait for the automatic calculation after a brief pause. The Results section displays two rates for each row: the amount per one quantity unit and the inverse quantity per one amount unit.
  • Click Add Item to insert additional rows for side-by-side comparison. Each row includes a Remove button to delete it. When two or more rows are present and share matching quantity labels, the Comparison section ranks them from lowest to highest unit rate.
  • Open Settings to adjust Decimal Places for output precision or check Show step-by-step formulas to reveal the division behind each result.
  • Click Reset to clear all rows, remove saved state, and restore a single blank row with default values.

The core formula is straightforward: Unit Rate = Total Amount / Total Quantity. The inverse rate reverses the division: Inverse Rate = Total Quantity / Total Amount. Both rates reduce a ratio to its per-one-unit equivalent. For example, 150 miles over 3 hours yields 50 miles per hour, while the inverse gives 0.02 hours per mile. Entering the same values with labels such as "dollars" and "pounds" instead converts the result into a price-per-weight comparison.

Comparing rates per unit applies across grocery shopping, fitness tracking, manufacturing, education, and everyday decision-making. Any situation where a total divides by a count benefits from seeing the per-unit breakdown.

  • Grocery Shopping: Enter the shelf price and package weight for two brands of rice to find the cost per ounce and identify the better deal without mental math.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Record miles driven and gallons consumed on a road trip to find miles per gallon. Compare across fill-ups to track changes in fuel economy over time.
  • Freelance Billing: Divide project revenue by hours worked to find an effective hourly rate. Add rows for different projects and rank them to see which client pays the highest per-hour rate.
  • Nutrition Planning: Enter total calories and number of servings for a recipe to find calories per serving. Adjust the batch size and recalculate to keep portions within a target range.
  • Manufacturing: Divide total production cost by units produced to find cost per unit. Compare product lines side by side to identify which items carry the highest marginal cost.
  • Education: Enter total pages read and total minutes spent to find a reading speed in pages per minute. Track the metric over several sessions to measure improvement.
  • Shipping Logistics: Divide total shipping cost by number of packages to find cost per package. Compare carrier quotes by entering each as a separate row and ranking the per-package rate.
  • Content Production: Enter total words written and hours spent to calculate words per hour. Compare drafting sessions to find which writing conditions produce the highest output rate.
