Documentation

Track total hours worked over any number of days or shifts by entering clock-in times, clock-out times, and break durations for each entry. The calculator handles both standard daytime schedules and overnight shifts that cross midnight.

  • Each row represents one shift or workday. Enter the Start Time in HH:MM format using either 24-hour notation (for example, 14:30) or 12-hour notation with AM or PM (for example, 2:30 PM). Enter the End Time in the same format.
  • If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator automatically detects an overnight shift and adds 24 hours to the end time before computing the difference.
  • Enter any Break (minutes) to deduct from the shift total. Leave it at zero if no break was taken. The break value cannot exceed the total span of the shift.
  • Optionally fill in the Date/Label field to tag each row with a day of the week, a date, or a project name for your own reference.
  • Click Add Row to create additional entries for more days or shifts. Each row has its own Remove button to delete it from the list.
  • Press Calculate to compute per-row hours and a running total. The results section shows hours for each entry, the total hours worked, total break time, and the average hours per entry.
  • Open Settings to choose between decimal-hour output (for example, 8.50) and HH:MM output (for example, 8:30). Adjust the number of decimal places when using decimal mode.
  • Enable Show step-by-step breakdowns in the settings panel to see the arithmetic for each row, including the raw time span before break deduction.
  • All entries and settings persist in your browser between visits. Click Reset to clear everything and start fresh with a single default row.
  • Time values also accept fractions and mixed numbers in the break field. For example, entering 1/2 as a break is interpreted as 0.5 minutes.

Tracking hours worked is fundamental to payroll, invoicing, compliance, and personal productivity. Below are scenarios where logging and summing shift times streamlines the process.

  • Freelance Invoicing: Log start and end times for each client session throughout the week, then read the total hours to bill. Decimal output translates directly to hourly-rate multiplication for invoice line items.
  • Payroll Verification: Cross-check timesheet entries against payroll records by entering each shift from the pay period. Compare the calculator total with the hours reported on a pay stub to catch discrepancies before they compound.
  • Overtime Tracking: Sum weekly hours to determine whether an employee has exceeded the 40-hour threshold. Subtract 40 from the total to find overtime hours owed at a premium rate.
  • Night Shift Scheduling: Nurses, security guards, and factory workers whose shifts span midnight can rely on the overnight detection to produce correct totals without manual date math.
  • Student Work-Study Logs: Students working part-time on campus can record each shift and export the weekly total to submit to their financial aid office or supervisor for hour verification.
  • Construction Site Tracking: Foremen recording arrival and departure times for crew members on a daily basis can add one row per worker per day and quickly tally labor hours for project cost estimation.
  • Remote Work Accountability: Distributed teams logging their own hours can enter daily start and stop times, deduct lunch breaks, and share the computed total with a manager for transparent time reporting.
  • Event Staffing: Coordinators scheduling volunteers or temporary staff for multi-day events can enter each person's shift times and produce a per-person hour count for stipend calculations or thank-you recognition.
  • Personal Productivity Audits: Track how many hours per week go toward deep work, meetings, or side projects by labeling each row with the activity category and reviewing the totals at the end of the week.
Inputs, outputs, and what the Work Hours Calculator computes

The form above accepts the following inputs and produces the outputs listed below. This summary is rendered in the page so the parameters are visible to crawlers, assistive tech, and indexing agents that don't fetch the embedded tool frame.

Inputs

  • Decimal hours (e.g., 8.50) · default: decimal
  • HH:MM format (e.g., 8:30) · default: hhmm
  • Decimal Places (for decimal mode) (numeric input) · default: 2 · range: 0 to 6
  • Show step-by-step breakdowns · default: 1
