Board footage measures the volume of lumber and is the standard unit for buying and selling hardwood in the United States and Canada. One board foot equals a piece of wood 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 1 inch thick, or 144 cubic inches. Enter the dimensions of each board to total the footage across every piece in an order.
- Enter the Length (ft) of each board in feet. Fractions such as 10 1/2 and decimals such as 10.5 are both accepted.
- Enter the Width (in) in inches. Mixed numbers like 5 3/4 work as well as decimal values.
- Enter the Thickness (in) in inches. Common lumber thicknesses include 1, 1.25 (5/4), 1.5, and 2 inches.
- Set the Number of Pieces to indicate how many identical boards you need.
- Click Add Row to enter additional lumber pieces with different dimensions.
- Open Settings to enter a Price per Board Foot for cost estimation, change the number of Decimal Places, or enable Show step-by-step calculations to view the formula derivation for each row.
- Click Calculate to compute board footage and total cost. Results also update automatically as you type.
- Open Settings and choose Import CSV to load lumber data from a CSV file with columns for pieces, length, width, and thickness, or Export CSV to download the current entries as a file.
- Click Reset to clear all entries and restore defaults.
The formula used is: board feet = length (ft) x width (in) x thickness (in) / 12. Multiply by the number of pieces for each row, then sum all rows for the total board footage.
