Define each straight run of fencing as a separate section with its own length and height. The calculator determines how many posts, pickets, and rails each section requires, then totals everything across the entire fence layout. Costs are computed per unit and summed into a single material estimate that includes an adjustable waste factor.

  • Add one section for each straight run of fence by clicking Add Section. Enter the Section Length (ft) and Section Height (ft) for each run.
  • Set the Post Spacing (ft) to control the on-center distance between posts. The default is 8 feet, which is standard for most residential wood fences.
  • Adjust Post Width (in) if using non-standard post stock. The default of 3.5 inches corresponds to a nominal 4x4 post.
  • Choose a Post Depth mode. Auto mode calculates depth as one-third of the above-ground height plus 6 inches, following common building guidelines. Manual mode lets you specify an exact depth in inches.
  • Set the Picket Width (in) and Picket Gap (in) to match your chosen picket stock and desired spacing. The defaults of 3.5 inches and 1.75 inches produce a standard dog-ear picket fence look.
  • Enter the number of Rails per Section. Two horizontal rails are standard for fences under 6 feet; three rails are common for taller fences.
  • If the fence includes gates, enter the Number of Gates and Gate Width (ft). Gate openings are subtracted from the total fence length before computing picket and post counts.
  • Fill in the Pricing fields with local material costs. Rail cost is priced per standard 8-foot board. Concrete bags are counted per post at the quantity you specify in Concrete Bags per Post.
  • Open Settings to adjust the Waste Factor (%) applied to the material subtotal and to toggle the step-by-step formula display.
  • Click Calculate or let the auto-calculation run after a brief pause. The Results section displays total counts, recommended post depth, and a full cost breakdown. Click Reset to clear all inputs and start over.
  • Numeric fields accept decimals (6.5), fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (5 1/2). Dollar signs and commas are stripped automatically.

Fence projects range from a single backyard boundary to multi-section perimeter enclosures with gates, and material estimates vary significantly with dimensions and local pricing. The scenarios below illustrate how to apply the fence calculator to common fencing situations.

  • Backyard Privacy Fence: Enter four sections matching each property line, set the height to 6 feet, and use three rails per section. The calculator totals all posts, pickets, and rails so you can place a single lumber order with the correct waste buffer.
  • Front Yard Picket Fence: Set a shorter height of 3 or 4 feet with wider picket gaps to achieve a decorative look. Reduce rail count to two and compare the total cost against pre-assembled panel alternatives.
  • Dog Run or Pet Enclosure: Define a small rectangular perimeter with one gate. Adjust post spacing to 6 feet for a sturdier enclosure and increase concrete bags per post to three for added stability.
  • Agricultural or Ranch Fencing: Model long straight runs of 100 feet or more per section. Increase post spacing to 10 or 12 feet and reduce picket counts by using wider boards or horizontal slats, reflected in the picket width and gap fields.
  • Contractor Bidding: Enter the client property dimensions, plug in current supplier pricing, and generate a material cost summary. Adjust the waste factor to 15 percent for complex layouts with multiple angles or cuts, ensuring the bid covers realistic material needs.
  • Slope and Terrain Planning: Break a hillside fence into shorter sections that follow grade changes. Each section gets its own length and height, letting you account for stepped or racked panel layouts across uneven terrain.
  • HOA or Permit Compliance: Verify that post spacing, fence height, and total linear footage meet local building codes or homeowner association requirements before purchasing materials.
  • Partial Fence Repair: Add only the damaged sections rather than the full perimeter. The calculator produces an accurate material list for the repair scope without overordering supplies.
