Gravel Calculatorv1.0.0
Estimate gravel volume, weight, and 50-pound bag count from area, depth, and material density. Handles rectangular, circular, triangular, and trapezoidal areas with eight preset densities plus a custom value, and projects cost per ton or per cubic yard.
Documentation
Enter area dimensions and desired depth to receive volume, weight, and cost estimates for gravel, crushed stone, river rock, and other aggregates. Four area shapes (rectangular, circular, triangular, and trapezoidal) cover standard and irregular project layouts.
- Select the Area Shape that matches your project area. Choose from rectangular, circular, triangular, or trapezoidal shapes. The input fields will update to match the selected shape.
- Enter the dimensions for your selected shape. For a rectangular area, provide the Length and Width. For a circular area, enter the Radius. Triangular areas require a Base and Height. Trapezoidal areas need Base 1, Base 2, and Height.
- Select the appropriate Length/Area Unit for your dimension inputs. Available units include feet, inches, yards, meters, and centimeters.
- Enter the desired gravel Depth and select the Depth Unit. A minimum depth of 2 to 4 inches is recommended for most applications.
- Choose the Gravel Type from the dropdown to use a preset density value. Common options include pea gravel, crushed stone, river rock, limestone, decomposed granite, sand, lava rock, and white marble chips. Select "Custom Density" to enter your own value in the Settings panel.
- Optionally enter a Price per Unit to receive a cost estimate. Select whether the price applies per US ton or per cubic yard.
- Click Calculate or wait for automatic calculation after entering values. Results display volume in cubic yards and cubic meters, weight in US tons and kilograms, and the number of 50-pound bags needed.
- All numeric inputs accept flexible formats including decimals (0.75), fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (5 1/2). The calculator also accepts commas and common symbols in numeric fields.
- Open Settings to adjust decimal places, enter a custom gravel density, or enable step-by-step formula display for educational review.
- Click Reset to clear all inputs and restore default values. Your inputs are automatically saved and restored when you return to the page.
Accurate gravel estimates prevent costly over-ordering and project delays from under-ordering across residential, commercial, and agricultural settings.
- Driveway Construction: Calculate the volume of crushed stone or pea gravel needed to build or resurface a residential driveway. Enter the driveway length, width, and a depth of 4 to 6 inches for a durable base layer.
- Patio and Walkway Base: Determine the amount of gravel required for a stable base layer under pavers, flagstone, or concrete patios. Use the rectangular or trapezoidal shape for irregular patio layouts.
- Landscaping and Garden Borders: Estimate decorative gravel quantities for garden paths, flower bed borders, and rock gardens. Select river rock or white marble chips and enter the area dimensions to plan material purchases.
- Drainage Projects: Calculate gravel fill for French drains, dry wells, and drainage trenches around foundations. Enter the trench dimensions to determine how much aggregate is needed for proper water management.
- Playground Surfaces: Plan the correct amount of pea gravel for playground areas by entering the play area dimensions and a recommended depth of 6 to 9 inches for safety compliance.
- Commercial Construction: Estimate aggregate quantities for road base, parking lot sub-base, and building foundation preparation on commercial job sites. Compare costs across gravel types using the price estimation feature.
- Agricultural Applications: Determine gravel needs for farm roads, livestock pen surfaces, and equipment pad areas. Use the circular shape option for round pen calculations and the trapezoidal option for irregularly shaped access roads.
- Budget Planning: Enter the price per ton or per cubic yard from local suppliers to generate accurate cost estimates before committing to a purchase. Compare costs between gravel types to find the most economical option for your project.
