Enter measurements for each roof section to get accurate square footage, weight, and cost estimates for a metal roofing project. The calculator applies a pitch multiplier derived from the rise-over-run ratio to convert flat area into actual roof surface area, then factors in waste percentage, material weight, and optional costs for underlayment and fasteners.

  • Start by entering the Length and Width in feet for each roof section. Both fields accept decimals, fractions such as 10 1/2, and mixed numbers such as 12-3/4.
  • Select the Roof Pitch for each section from the dropdown. Pitch values range from 1/12 (nearly flat) to 12/12 (45 degrees). The pitch multiplier equals the square root of (1 + (rise / 12) squared), so a 4/12 pitch multiplies the flat area by approximately 1.054.
  • Click Add Section to include additional roof planes. Most roofs have at least two sections (one per slope). Remove any section by clicking its Remove button.
  • Open the Settings panel to configure material, panel type, and cost parameters. Select a Material such as Steel (26 Gauge), Aluminum, or Copper. The Cost per Sq Ft field updates automatically when you change materials, but you can override it with a custom price.
  • Adjust the Waste Factor to account for cuts, overlaps, and trim pieces. A 10 percent default works for most rectangular sections. Complex roof shapes with valleys and hips may need 15 percent or more.
  • Check Include Underlayment and Include Fasteners and Trim to add those line items to the total cost. Set the per-square-foot rate for each in the corresponding fields.
  • Click Calculate to generate results. Each section displays its flat area, adjusted area after pitch correction, estimated weight, and material cost. The summary at the bottom shows combined totals and a grand total cost.
  • Enable Show step-by-step calculations in the settings panel to see the pitch multiplier formula and intermediate values for each section.
  • Click Reset to clear all sections and restore default settings. All inputs persist in your browser between visits, so you can return to a project in progress without re-entering data.

Metal roofing projects vary widely in scale and complexity, from a single-slope shed roof to multi-section residential re-roofs and commercial standing seam installations. The following scenarios illustrate how to apply the calculator across different project types and planning stages.

  • Residential Re-Roof Budgeting: Enter each roof plane of a gable or hip roof as a separate section to compare the total installed cost of steel versus aluminum panels. Adjust the waste factor to 15 percent for hip roofs with more angle cuts and valley trim.
  • Contractor Material Ordering: Input exact measurements from blueprints or field measurements to determine the total adjusted square footage including waste. Export the per-section breakdown to verify against supplier quotes and avoid over-ordering or shortfalls.
  • Agricultural Building Planning: Calculate roofing needs for barns, equipment sheds, and storage buildings. Select R-Panel or corrugated panel types and Steel (26 Gauge) material to reflect common agricultural metal roofing specifications and lower per-square-foot costs.
  • Structural Load Assessment: Review the estimated weight output per section and in total to verify that the existing or planned roof structure can support the chosen metal roofing material. Copper and zinc panels weigh significantly more per square foot than aluminum, which affects truss and rafter sizing.
  • Insurance and Appraisal Documentation: Generate a detailed cost breakdown showing material, underlayment, and fastener costs by section. The per-section and total figures provide supporting documentation for insurance claims, property appraisals, or renovation loan applications.
  • Garage and Workshop Projects: Enter a single section for a single-slope shed roof or two sections for a gable garage. Adjust the pitch to match the planned slope and compare standing seam versus corrugated pricing to find the right balance of appearance and budget.
  • Multi-Building Comparison: Run the calculator separately for each building on a property, such as a house, detached garage, and covered patio, to compare total roofing costs across structures and identify where material upgrades fit within the overall budget.
