Enter your roof dimensions and pitch to determine the total roofing area, number of squares, bundle count, and estimated project cost. The calculator applies a slope factor derived from the pitch ratio to convert flat footprint area into actual roof surface area. A configurable waste percentage adds material to account for cuts, overlaps, starter strips, and hip or valley waste.

• Enter the Roof Length and Roof Width in the dimensions fieldset. Both fields accept whole numbers, decimals, fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (5 1/2).
• Select the Unit System to switch between imperial (feet) and metric (meters). All area and cost outputs adjust accordingly.
• Choose the Roof Pitch from the dropdown. Pitch values range from flat (0/12) through steep slopes (18/12). The calculator multiplies the flat footprint by the pitch factor, which equals the square root of one plus the rise squared divided by 144.
• Select a Material Type to auto-fill the default cost per square for that material. Available options include asphalt 3-tab shingles, architectural shingles, wood shake, slate, clay tile, and concrete tile.
• Open Settings to adjust the Material Cost per Square, Waste Factor, labor inclusion and rates, underlayment pricing, and ridge cap parameters. The cost per square updates automatically when you change the material type, but you can override it manually.
• Check Include Labor to add labor cost per square to the total estimate. Check Include Underlayment to factor in synthetic or felt underlayment at a per-square-foot rate. Check Include Ridge Cap and enter the Ridge Length to add ridge cap material cost.
• Enable Show step-by-step calculations in Settings to display the full formula derivation, including flat area, pitch multiplier, adjusted area with waste, and each cost component broken down individually.
• Click Calculate or wait for the auto-calculate debounce to update results. Click Reset to restore all fields to their defaults and clear saved state.

• Residential Re-Roofing: Measure a 40 by 30 foot ranch home with a 4/12 pitch and architectural shingles to determine that approximately 13 squares and 39 bundles are needed, with a total material and labor estimate before contacting contractors.
• Insurance Claims: Verify adjuster measurements by entering the roof footprint and pitch from a claims report. Compare the calculator output against the adjuster's square count to confirm or dispute the scope of the claim.
• Contractor Bidding: Run estimates for multiple material options on the same roof dimensions. Compare the total cost of architectural shingles against slate or clay tile to present tiered options to homeowners during the bidding process.
• Do-It-Yourself Repairs: Enter the dimensions of a single damaged section rather than the whole roof to determine how many bundles to purchase for a partial replacement or repair job at a specific pitch.
• Budget Planning: Toggle labor and underlayment on or off to see how each line item affects the total. Adjust the waste factor from the standard 10 percent up to 15 or 20 percent for complex roof geometries with multiple valleys and hips.
• Material Comparison: Switch between 3-tab shingles, wood shake, and concrete tile on the same roof footprint to compare not just material cost but also bundle or unit counts, helping narrow down the right product before visiting a supplier.
• Metric Projects: Switch to metric units for international construction projects. Enter dimensions in meters and receive area in square meters, with cost still calculated per roofing square (the nearest metric equivalent of 100 square feet, which is 9.29 square meters).
