Rug sizing depends on room dimensions, furniture arrangement, and the clearance left between the rug edge and the surrounding walls. Interior designers recommend exposing a consistent border of bare floor around the rug perimeter, typically 12 to 24 inches in most living spaces and 18 inches as the standard default. Proportional rules apply to each room you define, and the resulting target area matches against common standard rug sizes to find the closest fit.

• Click Add Room to create a room entry. Each room includes fields for a name, length, width, and room type.
• Enter the Room Length and Room Width in feet or meters, depending on your selected unit system. Fractions (such as 12 1/2 or 15 3/4), decimals, and whole numbers are all accepted.
• Select the Room Type from the dropdown. Options include Living Room, Dining Room, Bedroom, Hallway or Runner, and Open Concept. Each room type applies slightly different clearance and sizing rules drawn from interior design conventions.
• Set Rugs in This Room to the number of rugs you want to place in that space. Leaving it at 1 sizes a single rug against the whole room. Entering 2 or more divides the room into that many equal zones along its long wall and sizes a rug for each zone, which is how large or open-plan spaces get filled without one oversized rug. The limit is 6 rugs per room.
• Adjust the Minimum Wall Clearance in the Settings panel if your preference differs from the 18-inch default. Hallway and runner layouts use a narrower clearance automatically.
• Click Calculate or wait for the automatic debounce to process your inputs. The results section will display the target rug dimensions for each room, the three closest standard rug sizes, and the floor coverage percentage for each option.
• Add as many rooms as needed by clicking Add Room again. Remove any room by clicking the Remove button on that entry.
• Toggle the Show step-by-step calculations checkbox in Settings to reveal the clearance subtraction and area formulas used to arrive at each recommendation.
• Switch between Imperial and Metric units in Settings. Imperial mode displays results in feet and inches, while metric mode displays meters.
• Click Reset to clear all rooms and saved data, restoring the calculator to its initial state with one default room.

Standard rug sizes referenced in the recommendations include 3 by 5 feet, 4 by 6 feet, 5 by 7 feet, 5 by 8 feet, 6 by 9 feet, 8 by 10 feet, 9 by 12 feet, 10 by 13 feet, 10 by 14 feet, and 12 by 15 feet. Runner sizes include 2 by 6 feet, 2 by 8 feet, 2 by 10 feet, 2.5 by 8 feet, and 2.5 by 12 feet. Zone length equals room length divided by the number of rugs, so a single rug treats the whole room as one zone. Target rug width equals room width minus twice the wall clearance, and target rug length equals zone length minus twice the wall clearance. Coverage percentage equals rug area divided by total room area, multiplied by 100, and the combined figure sums the best match for every zone.

Selecting the right rug size prevents costly returns and ensures furniture arrangements look proportional. The following scenarios illustrate how different room configurations benefit from calculated sizing rather than guesswork.

• Living Room Layout: Determine whether an 8 by 10 or 9 by 12 rug fits a 14 by 18 foot living room with a sectional sofa. Enter the room dimensions, select Living Room as the type, and compare the coverage percentages of each recommended standard size to decide which anchors the seating area without crowding the walkways.
• Dining Room Sizing: Verify that a rug extends at least 24 inches beyond each side of a dining table so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. Enter the dining room dimensions, select Dining Room, and the calculator applies the wider clearance rule specific to dining spaces.
• Bedroom Placement: Find a rug that extends 18 to 24 inches beyond the sides and foot of a queen or king bed. Enter the bedroom measurements, select Bedroom, and review which standard size provides the visible border around the bed frame recommended by interior design guidelines.
• Hallway Runners: Measure a narrow hallway at 3.5 by 14 feet and select Hallway or Runner. The calculator switches to runner-specific standard sizes and applies a narrower clearance, recommending a 2.5 by 12 foot runner that leaves a few inches of floor exposed on each side.
• Open Concept Spaces: Define a large open-plan area at 20 by 25 feet, select Open Concept, and set Rugs in This Room to 2. The 25-foot length splits into two 12.5-foot zones, each sized independently, so one rug anchors the seating area and a second anchors a reading nook or entryway. The combined coverage figure shows how much of the floor the pair actually covers.
• Filling a Long Room: A 14 by 30 foot great room swallows a single 12 by 15 rug and leaves the far end bare. Setting Rugs in This Room to 3 divides the length into three 10-foot zones and returns a rug size for each, which fills the space evenly instead of stranding one rug in the middle.
• Renovation Planning: Before purchasing flooring, enter each room in a home to determine which rooms need area rugs versus wall-to-wall coverage. Compare the recommended rug sizes against flooring costs to budget for both hard surfaces and area rugs across an entire renovation project.
