Tile Calculatorv1.0.0
Estimate the number of tiles required for any rectangular floor or wall area given tile dimensions, grout spacing, and a configurable waste allowance. Formulas account for effective tile coverage including grout joints, with optional cost and box quantity estimates.

Documentation
Plan a tiling project by entering room or wall measurements along with tile dimensions to find out how many tiles to purchase. The calculator factors in grout joint width and a waste percentage so the estimate accounts for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching at edges.
- Select Imperial or Metric to set the measurement system. Imperial mode accepts area dimensions in feet and tile dimensions in inches. Metric mode uses meters for the area and centimeters for tiles.
- Choose Enter length and width to type the two sides of the area into the Area Length and Area Width fields. Alternatively, select Enter total area directly and type the known square footage or square meters into the Total Area field.
- Enter the tile size in the Tile Length and Tile Width fields. All standard formats are accepted: whole numbers, decimals (0.75), fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (5 1/16 or 1-3/8).
- Click Calculate or wait for the automatic debounce to display results. The output shows the total area, the effective tile coverage area including grout, the number of tiles required with waste, and the area covered by the tiles you order.
- Open Settings to adjust the Waste Allowance percentage, Grout Width, Price Per Tile, and Tiles Per Box. When a price is entered, an estimated material cost appears in the results. When tiles per box is entered, the number of boxes to purchase appears as well.
- Enable Show step-by-step calculation inside the settings panel to see the formula derivation, including the effective tile dimensions with grout, total area computation, and the waste multiplier applied to the raw tile count.
- Click Reset to restore all fields to their defaults and clear saved state.
The core formula converts the area and tile dimensions into a common unit. In imperial mode, area length and width in feet become square feet, while tile dimensions in inches convert to feet by dividing by 12. Effective tile size equals the tile dimension plus the grout width on each side. Total tiles before waste equals the total area divided by the effective tile area. The waste multiplier is (1 + waste percentage / 100), and the final tile count rounds up to the nearest whole number.
Tiling projects range from small backsplashes to full-floor renovations. Accurate material estimation prevents costly return trips and reduces leftover waste.
- Bathroom Floor Renovation: Enter a 5 by 8 foot bathroom floor with 6 by 6 inch ceramic tiles and 1/8 inch grout spacing. The calculator returns the exact tile count with a 10 percent waste buffer for cuts around the toilet flange and vanity.
- Kitchen Backsplash: Measure the wall area behind countertops, enter 3 by 6 inch subway tile dimensions, and adjust waste to 15 percent to account for outlet cutouts and end-piece trimming along upper cabinets.
- Large Format Floor Tile: Specify 24 by 24 inch porcelain tiles for an open-plan living area. Enter the room length and width, set grout to 1/16 inch for a minimal joint look, and review the box count needed when tiles come 4 per box.
- Outdoor Patio: Enter patio dimensions in feet and select a 16 by 16 inch paver. Increase waste to 12 percent to handle irregular border cuts against garden beds and curved walkway edges.
- Commercial Space Estimation: Type the total known square footage directly for a retail space where the floor plan is irregular. Add the tile price per unit to get a material cost estimate for the bid proposal.
- Metric Renovation Planning: Switch to metric mode, enter room dimensions in meters and tile size in centimeters for projects outside the United States. All formulas adjust automatically, and results display in square meters.
- Mosaic Accent Wall: Enter a small accent wall area and specify 1 by 1 inch mosaic tile dimensions. The high tile count confirms the number of mesh sheets to order when each sheet covers a known area.
- Budget Comparison: Enter the same room dimensions twice with different tile sizes and prices to compare material costs between a premium large-format tile and a standard mid-range option.
