Documentation

Enter room measurements, opening dimensions, and wallpaper roll specifications to find out how many rolls are needed. Doors, windows, pattern repeats, and a configurable waste allowance all factor into the final roll count so it reflects real-world installation conditions rather than raw area alone.

  • Select a unit system. Imperial mode accepts values in feet and inches; metric mode accepts meters and centimeters. All internal conversions happen automatically when switching between systems.
  • Enter the Room Length, Room Width, and Ceiling Height. Fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (8 1/2), and decimals (8.5) are all valid in every numeric field.
  • Specify the Number of Doors along with each door's average Door Width and Door Height. Total door area is subtracted from the gross wall area.
  • Specify the Number of Windows along with each window's average Window Width and Window Height. Window area is also subtracted from the gross wall area.
  • Enter the wallpaper Roll Width and Roll Length. Standard US single rolls are 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long; European rolls are typically 53 centimeters wide and 10 meters long. Adjust these values to match the product label.
  • If the wallpaper has a repeating pattern, enter the Pattern Repeat distance. Each strip height rounds up to the next full repeat so that patterns align across strips. Set this to zero for solid or random-match wallpapers.
  • Click Settings to adjust the Waste Allowance percentage. The default is 10 percent, which accounts for trimming, miscuts, and matching waste. Increase it for complex patterns or irregular walls.
  • Enable Show step-by-step formulas inside the settings panel to view the full derivation: perimeter, gross wall area, openings deduction, adjusted strip height, strips per roll, total strips, and final roll count.
  • Press Calculate or let the auto-calculate debounce run after changing any input. Press Reset to restore all fields to their defaults and clear saved state.
  • All inputs persist across browser sessions via localStorage, so returning to the page restores previous values automatically.

Accurate roll estimation prevents costly over-ordering and frustrating mid-project shortages. The scenarios below illustrate how different room configurations and wallpaper types affect material requirements.

  • Single bedroom renovation: A 12 by 10 foot bedroom with 8-foot ceilings, one door, and two windows typically requires 7 to 9 single rolls of standard-width wallpaper. Enter exact opening sizes to avoid purchasing an extra roll that goes unused.
  • Accent wall projects: Set room length to the accent wall width and room width to zero (or a negligible value), then set doors and windows to zero if the accent wall has none. Output shows the precise roll count for a single surface.
  • Pattern-heavy wallpaper: Large-repeat patterns (24 inches or more) waste significant material at each strip cut. Enter the repeat distance to see how it increases the effective strip height and the total roll count compared to a plain wallpaper of the same roll size.
  • Commercial spaces: Offices and retail interiors often have higher ceilings (9 to 12 feet) and multiple door and window openings. Adjust the ceiling height and opening counts to generate a bill of materials before requesting supplier quotes.
  • Metric renovations: Switch to metric mode for rooms measured in meters. A standard European roll (0.53 meters wide, 10 meters long) differs substantially from a US single roll, and the calculator adapts strip and roll math to whichever specification is entered.
  • Budget planning: Multiply the roll count by the per-roll price from a retailer to estimate total wallpaper cost. Increasing the waste allowance to 15 percent provides a safety margin for first-time installers or rooms with many corners and cutouts.
  • Contractor estimates: Generate roll counts for multiple rooms by running the calculator once per room and summing results. Consistent waste allowance settings across rooms produce a reliable total order quantity.
  • Comparing wallpaper options: Swap the roll width and length values to compare standard, wide-format, and European rolls side by side. Wider rolls reduce seam count but may require more trimming around openings.
