Baking Pan Size Calculatorv1.0.0
Computes pan volume, batter, box mix count, party (2x2 in) and wedding (1x2 in) servings, and heating cores from L x W x D across 17 pan shapes. Batter fills 50 percent at depths to 2 in and 66.66 percent at 3 in or deeper. Pie and tart pans use external sizing (9 in outer equals 8 in inner) and crust-dough mode computes surface area times thickness.
Documentation
Capacity mode resolves shape and L x W x D into pan volume, batter required, box-mix count, party (2 x 2 in) and wedding (1 x 2 in) servings, and heating cores. Fit mode checks which pans physically fit inside an oven, air fryer, pressure cooker, or instant cooker.
- Pick imperial or metric units.
- Pick a shape and type L x W x D, or pick a preset to auto-fill. Decimals, fractions (3 1/2), and mixed numbers all parse.
- Pick what you are baking. Cake and brownie batters follow the depth rule: 50 percent fill up to 2 in depth, 66.66 percent at 3 in or deeper, linear between. Cheesecake (85 percent), pie filling (95 percent), tart filling (90 percent), sweet bread (66 percent), and cupcake batter (66 percent of cup) have their own ratios. Pie crust single, pie crust double, and tart crust switch to surface area times dough thickness (default 1/8 in).
- Set batter volume per box (default 946 ml = one 4-cup cake mix). Press Calculate.
Pie and tart pans are measured externally (a 9 in pan has an 8 in interior). Round, Springform, Round Ring, and Angel Food use Pi x (L/2) x (W/2) x D. Tube and Angel Food subtract a center hole. Heart uses L x W x D x 0.4. Each shape carries a sloped-side factor so custom dimensions match real pans.
Heating cores: round and springform pans get max(1, floor((dia - 8) / 2.5)) cores when diameter exceeds 9 in or depth reaches 3 in. A 10 x 3 returns 1, an 18 x 3 returns 4.
Volumes snap to standard increments. Cups round to 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, or 3/4 (so 7/16 cup displays as 1/2 cup). Milliliters round to 5, 10, 25, or 50.
Fit mode takes interior length, width, and height (or diameter for cylindrical interiors) plus air-flow clearance per side (default 0.5 in). The table reports per-layer count, stack layers, and total capacity.
Scaling a recipe to an unusual pan, planning a multi-tier cake, swapping pans, or testing whether a pressure cooker or instant cooker will fit a cake pan all run the same arithmetic: pan volume, batter ratio, mix count, servings, fit.
- Box-mix cake: Type a 9 x 9 x 2 round to see that one 946 ml box fills it (50 percent of 1035 ml = 517 ml batter, so 0.55 box) and yields 16 party servings.
- Multi-tier wedding cake: Enter 14 x 14 x 3 round, four pans, wedding 1 x 2 in servings, and read total batter, mix count, and serving yield for the bottom tier.
- Cheesecake conversion: Have a 9 in springform recipe but only own a 10 in. Pick Springform, type each size, compare batter capacities, scale ingredients.
- Pie substitution: A 9 in pie holds 1100 ml, a 10 in pie 1410 ml. Pie shape subtracts 1 in from outer L and W automatically.
- Bundt or Angel Food: Pick Tube or Angel Food so the center hole is removed from the volume.
- Sheet cake: A half sheet (13 x 17.75 x 1.06 in) yields 3386 ml and 57 party servings.
- Pie crust dough: Pick a 9 in pie pan and double crust at 1/8 in thickness to see the dough volume.
- Air fryer baking: Fit mode against a 13.23 x 13.23 x 14.37 in cylindrical basket shows which pans fit with adequate air flow.
- Cupcake tray planning: Pick Cupcake, set cup dimensions and tray count, get mix count and serving yield.
- Custom oddball pan: Pick Custom, choose a base shape, enter dimensions for any pan on hand.
