Recipes specify garlic in many forms, from whole cloves to powdered garlic to jarred minced, and substituting one for another without the right ratio can produce a dish that is too mild or overwhelmingly pungent. Each garlic form has a different potency and volume density, so a teaspoon of garlic powder does not equal a teaspoon of minced garlic. Standard culinary equivalencies map every common form back to a baseline of one medium clove, making accurate cross-form substitution straightforward.

  • Enter the quantity of garlic you have in the Amount field. Accepted input formats include whole numbers (3), decimals (0.5), fractions (1/2), and mixed numbers (2 1/4 or 2-1/4).
  • Select the starting garlic form from the From dropdown. Available forms include Cloves, Heads, Teaspoons Minced, Tablespoons Minced, Teaspoons Garlic Powder, Teaspoons Granulated Garlic, Teaspoons Garlic Flakes, Teaspoons Jarred Minced, Teaspoons Garlic Juice, and Teaspoons Garlic Salt.
  • Select the target garlic form from the To dropdown. The converter will calculate how much of the target form is equivalent to the source amount you entered.
  • Click the Convert button or wait for the automatic calculation after a brief pause. The result appears in the Result section with the converted quantity and unit label.
  • Click the Swap button between the two dropdowns to reverse the conversion direction while keeping the same amount.
  • Open the Settings panel to adjust the number of Decimal Places in the output (default is 2) or to change the Cloves per Head assumption (default is 10, representing an average-sized head of garlic).
  • Click Reset to clear all saved preferences and return every field to its default value.

The core equivalencies for one medium garlic clove are: 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of jarred minced garlic, 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon of granulated garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of dried garlic flakes, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic juice, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt. One tablespoon of minced garlic equals 3 teaspoons, or about 3 cloves. One head of garlic contains roughly 10 cloves by default, though this varies by cultivar and can be adjusted in settings.

Garlic powder and granulated garlic are the most concentrated forms, so small measurement differences have a large impact on flavor. Measuring with proper measuring spoons rather than estimating by sight produces the most reliable results when working with these concentrated forms.

Garlic appears in cuisines worldwide and is sold in dozens of preparations. Knowing the exact substitution ratio prevents over- or under-seasoning when switching between whatever form is available and whatever form a recipe demands.

  • Home Cooking: A recipe calls for 4 cloves of minced garlic but only garlic powder is on hand. Enter 4 cloves and convert to garlic powder to find that 1/2 teaspoon delivers the same flavor intensity without the prep work of peeling and mincing.
  • Meal Preparation: Batch cooking for the week requires scaling a recipe from 2 cloves to 20. Convert 20 cloves to tablespoons of minced garlic to measure out the total volume in one step instead of counting individual cloves.
  • Restaurant Kitchens: A line cook receives a case of jarred minced garlic instead of the usual fresh bulbs. Convert the recipe's clove count to teaspoons of jarred minced to maintain dish consistency across ingredient swaps.
  • Grocery Shopping: Determine how many heads of garlic to purchase for a dinner party by converting the total clove count across all planned dishes into heads, then rounding up.
  • Dietary Tracking: Log garlic intake by volume by converting between forms. Converting cloves to teaspoons of powder helps match nutrition database entries that list garlic powder by the teaspoon.
  • Recipe Development: Test how garlic intensity changes when substituting dried flakes for fresh cloves. Convert between the two forms at various quantities to find the ratio that matches the intended flavor profile.
  • Garden Harvest Planning: Estimate the yield from a garlic patch by converting the expected number of heads into cloves and then into teaspoons of minced garlic.
