Documentation

Enter the weight of your turkey and select a cooking method to receive estimated cook times, defrost durations, and serving counts. The calculator adjusts results based on weight, stuffing status, oven temperature, and cooking technique so you can plan your meal with confidence.

  • Type the turkey weight into the Turkey Weight field. Accepted formats include whole numbers (14), decimals (12.5), fractions (1/2), and mixed numbers (12 1/2).
  • Select Pounds (lb) or Kilograms (kg) from the Weight Unit dropdown. The calculator converts kilograms to pounds internally for all time estimates.
  • Choose Unstuffed or Stuffed under Stuffing. Stuffed turkeys require longer cooking times to reach a safe internal temperature throughout the cavity.
  • Pick a Cooking Method from the dropdown. Conventional oven roasting is the default. Convection oven cooking reduces the time by roughly 25 percent. Deep frying cooks at approximately 3 to 4 minutes per pound. Smoking uses lower heat over a longer period at about 30 to 40 minutes per pound.
  • Adjust the Oven/Oil Temperature if you plan to cook at a temperature other than the recommended default. Each method has a standard temperature that loads automatically: 325 degrees F for conventional, 300 degrees F for convection, 350 degrees F for deep frying, and 225 degrees F for smoking.
  • Select °F or °C to match your thermometer or recipe. All internal calculations convert to Fahrenheit when needed.
  • Click Calculate or wait for automatic calculation after you stop typing. Results appear below the button area and include estimated cook time, refrigerator defrost time, cold water defrost time, approximate servings, recommended rest time, and the safe internal temperature target.
  • Open Settings to change the Servings per Pound ratio or to enable the Show step-by-step breakdown option, which displays the formulas and intermediate values behind each result.
  • Click Reset to restore all fields to their defaults and clear saved state.

Planning a turkey dinner involves coordinating defrost timing, oven scheduling, and portion sizing. The scenarios below illustrate how to apply the calculator across different cooking situations and group sizes.

  • Thanksgiving dinner: Enter a 20-pound unstuffed turkey using the conventional oven method at 325 degrees F. The calculator returns an estimated cook time of 4 to 4.75 hours, a refrigerator defrost window of 4 to 5 days, and an approximate serving count for 20 guests. Start defrosting by the Sunday before Thanksgiving to have the bird ready on Thursday morning.
  • Small holiday gathering: A 10-pound stuffed turkey at 325 degrees F produces a cook time estimate of roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. The cold water defrost option shows 5 hours, which works for a same-day or next-day thaw when refrigerator space is limited.
  • Deep-fried turkey: Enter a 14-pound unstuffed turkey with the deep fried method at 350 degrees F. The result shows approximately 42 to 56 minutes of frying time. Deep frying does not support stuffed turkeys, and the calculator accounts for the faster cooking rate of full oil immersion.
  • Smoked turkey preparation: A 16-pound turkey smoked at 225 degrees F takes an estimated 8 to 10.7 hours. Start the smoker early in the morning and use the defrost timeline to plan 3 to 4 days of refrigerator thawing beforehand.
  • Convection oven cooking: Switch to the convection method for a 12-pound turkey to see how the reduced cook time compares to conventional roasting. Convection ovens circulate hot air for more even heat distribution, cutting roughly 25 percent from the total time.
  • Meal prep and portioning: Adjust the Servings per Pound setting to 0.75 if you want generous leftovers, or increase it to 1.25 for lighter portions. The serving estimate updates to reflect the adjusted ratio, helping you decide whether one turkey is enough or if you need a second bird.
  • Metric weight entry: Select kilograms and enter the weight as printed on the packaging. The calculator handles the conversion to pounds for all cooking formulas, so no manual math is needed. A 7-kilogram turkey converts to approximately 15.4 pounds before time estimates are computed.
