Determine the environmental cost of cryptocurrency activity by selecting a coin, choosing between transaction-based or holding-based analysis, and reviewing detailed energy and carbon breakdowns. The calculator covers ten major cryptocurrencies with distinct energy profiles ranging from proof-of-work chains like Bitcoin to energy-efficient proof-of-stake networks like Cardano and Solana.
- Select a cryptocurrency from the Cryptocurrency dropdown. Each coin carries a specific energy-per-transaction or annualized-energy-per-coin value reflecting its consensus mechanism and network activity.
- Choose an Activity Type. Select Transactions to calculate the footprint of a specific number of on-chain transactions. Select Holdings to estimate the annualized energy share attributable to holding a given number of coins, scaled by the selected time period.
- Enter the Number of transactions or coins held in the amount field. The field accepts decimals (0.5), fractions (3/4), and mixed numbers (1 1/2).
- When using the holdings mode, select a Time period to scale the annualized figure to a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly window.
- Open Settings to change the energy source assumption. Grid Average uses the global electricity mix at 0.417 kg CO2 per kWh. Coal, Natural Gas, Renewable, and Nuclear options apply the carbon intensity specific to that generation method, allowing comparison across different grid compositions.
- Enable Show step-by-step calculations within Settings to display the formula substitution and intermediate values behind each result.
- Press Calculate or allow the 500-millisecond auto-calculation debounce to trigger results automatically after input changes.
- Review four output metrics: total energy consumption in kWh, carbon emissions in kg CO2, the number of trees required to offset those emissions over one year, and the equivalent driving distance in miles producing the same CO2.
- A household electricity comparison expresses the energy figure as days of average US household consumption at 30 kWh per day.
- Press Reset to clear all saved state and restore every field to its default value.
