Beer line length is the variable that balances a draft system so beer pours at the correct rate without excessive foam or a sluggish flow. Balancing the system means matching its total resistance to the CO2 pressure pushing the beer through the line. Four things contribute to that resistance: the CO2 pressure itself, the gravitational resistance from any vertical rise between the keg and the faucet, the resistance of the faucet assembly, and the friction resistance of the tubing.

CO2 pressure is the pressure set on the regulator; most homebrewers serve between 8 and 14 PSI depending on style and desired carbonation. A forced carbonation calculation determines the correct serving pressure for a target carbonation level at a given temperature when that pressure is not already known. Vertical rise is the distance from the center of the keg to the point where the faucet dispenses beer; a typical kegerator with a tower runs 1 to 4 feet. Tubing type sets the friction resistance per foot: 3/16 inch ID vinyl tubing, the most common choice for homebrewers, runs approximately 3.0 PSI of resistance per foot, and any tubing not covered by that default can be entered directly as a custom resistance rating in PSI per foot from the manufacturer. Faucet resistance defaults to 1 PSI, which fits most standard faucets.

The line length formula is Line Length = (CO2 Pressure - Gravity Loss - Faucet Resistance) / Tubing Resistance, where Gravity Loss equals 0.5 PSI per foot of vertical rise. A safety margin can be added to the result so the line can be trimmed to fit rather than replaced when it comes up short.

A kegerator serves beer at 12 PSI through a tower with 2 feet of vertical rise, using 3/16 inch vinyl tubing (3.0 PSI per foot) and the default 1 PSI faucet resistance. Gravity loss is 0.5 x 2 = 1.0 PSI. Line length is (12 - 1.0 - 1) / 3.0 = 10 / 3.0, or about 3.33 feet.

Balancing a draft system matters for anyone serving beer from a keg, at home or commercially. Getting the line length right eliminates the common pouring problems: excessive foam, slow pours, and inconsistent flow across different beers and carbonation levels.

  • Kegerator Build: Set up a new kegerator by finding the ideal line length before cutting tubing. Tower height and serving pressure give a precise measurement, and adding the recommended safety margin allows trimming to fit rather than replacing a line that runs short.
  • Homebrew Serving: Homebrewed ales and lagers with different carbonation targets need different line lengths. A low-carbonation English bitter at 8 PSI requires a different line than a highly carbonated Belgian witbier at 14 PSI.
  • Multi-Tap Systems: Different taps in a multi-tap system may serve beers at different pressures, so each line's optimal length is calculated separately.
  • Troubleshooting Foam: Diagnose foamy pours by checking whether the current line length matches the calculated recommendation. A line significantly shorter than the calculated result is a likely cause of excessive foam.
  • Commercial Draft Systems: Bar and restaurant draft systems with long runs from walk-in coolers need line lengths that account for greater vertical rise and the resistance of the chosen tubing diameter over longer distances.
  • Jockey Box Setup: Portable draft systems for events and festivals have a different vertical rise and tubing configuration than a standard kegerator, so the coil or line length is calculated from the specific parameters of that setup.
