This calculator determines how effectively your brewing process extracts fermentable sugars from grain. Enter your batch data and grain bill to receive an efficiency percentage and a points per pound per gallon (PPG) figure. The tool supports four efficiency measurement types: Conversion, Pre-Boil, Ending Kettle, and Brewhouse. Each type measures extraction at a different stage of the brewing process, allowing you to pinpoint where losses occur.
- Select an Efficiency Type using the radio buttons. Brewhouse efficiency measures total extraction to the fermenter. Conversion efficiency measures mash extraction only and requires a water volume input instead of wort volume.
- Choose your Unit System: US (Gallons and Pounds) or Metric (Liters and Kilograms). All labels and calculations update automatically when you switch units.
- Enter the Wort Volume collected at the measurement point. For Conversion efficiency, enter the Total Mash Water Volume instead.
- Enter the Gravity Measurement in standard 1.xxx format (for example, 1.052). Adjust your reading for temperature using a hydrometer correction calculator if needed.
- Build your Grain Bill by entering each grain with its weight and potential extract in PPG. Use the Add Grain button to add more rows. Each row includes a remove button for easy editing. Common base malts have a PPG around 36 to 37, while specialty malts range from 25 to 35.
- Click Calculate or allow the auto-calculation to update results as you type. The tool applies a 500-millisecond debounce to avoid excessive recalculation.
- Open Settings to adjust decimal precision or enable the step-by-step derivation display, which shows the formula substitution and intermediate values.
- All numeric inputs accept fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (5 1/2), decimals (0.75), and scientific notation (1.5e3).
The core formulas are: Actual Points = (Gravity - 1) x 1000 x Volume. Potential Points = Sum of (Grain Weight x Grain PPG). Efficiency Percentage = (Actual Points / Potential Points) x 100. For metric inputs, the calculator converts liters to gallons (1 L = 0.264172 gal) and kilograms to pounds (1 kg = 2.20462 lb) before applying the PPG-based formulas.

- All-Grain Homebrewing: Measure brewhouse efficiency after transferring wort to the fermenter. Compare your actual efficiency to recipe assumptions (typically 70 to 75 percent) and adjust grain quantities for future batches.
- Mash Optimization: Use conversion efficiency to evaluate how well your mash extracts sugars before any losses from lautering or boiling. A low conversion efficiency may indicate incorrect mash temperature, pH issues, or insufficient crush.
- Equipment Comparison: Track pre-boil and ending kettle efficiency to isolate losses from specific equipment. Identify whether upgrading your mash tun, improving your sparge technique, or reducing dead space would have the greatest impact.
- Recipe Scaling: Determine your system efficiency to accurately scale recipes. Knowing your consistent brewhouse efficiency allows you to adjust grain bills when adapting recipes designed for different systems.
