Coffee brewing comes down to a ratio between coffee and water, a temperature, a brew time, and a grind size, and each brewing method has its own established range for all four. Presets for each method draw from Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) guidelines and peer-reviewed extraction research: Pour Over (V60) uses a 1:16 ratio at 96 degrees Celsius with a medium-fine grind, French Press uses 1:15 at 93 degrees with a coarse grind, Espresso uses 1:2 at 93 degrees with a fine grind, and Cold Brew uses 1:8 at room temperature with a coarse grind. The SCA golden cup standard recommends approximately 1:16.67 for filter coffee generally.

Coffee amount, in grams, is multiplied by the water ratio to determine total water volume. The ratio's water number sets extraction strength: a higher number produces a lighter brew, and a lower number produces a stronger concentrate. Water temperature matters because most hot brewing methods extract optimally between 90 and 96 degrees Celsius (194 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit), while cold brew works at room or refrigerator temperature instead. Grind size follows brew time: a finer grind increases extraction surface area and suits shorter brew times, while a coarser grind reduces bitterness across the longer immersion times used by methods like French press or cold brew. Milk, cream, syrup, sugar, water, or any other addition adds to the total beverage volume beyond the brewed coffee itself.

Switching methods reloads that method's full preset in one step, ratio, temperature, brew time, and grind together, rather than requiring each value to be reset by hand, and that auto-preset behavior can be turned off in Settings for someone deliberately mixing parameters from two different methods. A V60 pour-over with 20 grams of coffee at the standard 1:16 ratio needs 20 x 16 = 320 grams of water. Shifting to the bolder 1:15 ratio for the same 20 grams instead needs 20 x 15 = 300 grams, a smaller volume producing a stronger cup from the same dose.

Brewing ratios and parameters vary across methods, bean origins, roast levels, and personal taste. Anchoring recommendations to published extraction science removes guesswork and provides a verified baseline for every adjustment.
