Cold brew coffee is built from a coffee-to-water ratio, and the water volume and yield estimates for a batch follow directly from the coffee amount and the chosen brew style. Concentrate uses a 1:5 coffee-to-water ratio and produces a strong base meant to be diluted before drinking. Ready to Drink uses a 1:8 ratio and produces coffee at drinking strength without further dilution. A custom ratio can also be set for any style in between.
Coffee amount can be entered in grams, ounces, or tablespoons; one tablespoon of ground coffee is treated as approximately 5.3 grams for conversion. Water and output volumes can be displayed in milliliters, fluid ounces, or cups. Steep time, chosen from 12, 16, 18, or 24 hours, affects the result directly: longer steep times generally produce a stronger, smoother extraction with lower acidity. Number of servings and serving size together set how many drinks a batch yields, since the diluted yield is divided by the serving size.
Settings holds the dilution ratio for concentrate batches, entered as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 1:1 for equal parts concentrate and water or 1:2 for one part concentrate to two parts water, along with a grind coarseness recommendation and a step-by-step formula display. Because concentrate is meant to be cut with water or milk after steeping and ready-to-drink is not, the same coffee weight produces a very different final serving strength depending on which style is chosen, independent of the steep time used.
100 grams of coffee at the 1:5 concentrate ratio needs 100 x 5 = 500 milliliters of water to steep. The same 100 grams at the 1:8 ready-to-drink ratio instead needs 100 x 8 = 800 milliliters, since that style skips the later dilution step entirely.
