Freeze distilling, also known as fractional freezing, concentrates alcohol in beer or other beverages by removing frozen water. This calculator determines the new alcohol by volume (ABV) after you remove ice or drain the concentrated liquid from the container. The core formula divides the total alcohol content by the remaining liquid volume to produce the resulting ABV percentage.

Follow these steps to calculate your post-freeze-distilling ABV:

  • Enter the Starting Beer Volume in the text field. This accepts whole numbers, decimals (such as 18.5), fractions (such as 3/4), and mixed numbers (such as 5 1/2).
  • Select the appropriate Volume Unit from the dropdown: Liters, US Gallons, or UK Gallons.
  • Enter the Starting ABV (%) of your beer before freeze distilling. Typical values range from 4% to 12% for most beer styles.
  • Choose your Method. Select "Removal of Ice" if you measured how much ice you took out, or select "Draining Beer" if you measured how much concentrated beer you drained from the container.
  • Enter the Volume of Ice Removed or the Volume of Beer Drained depending on the method you selected.

The formula used is: New ABV = (Starting Volume x Starting ABV) / Final Volume. For ice removal, the final volume equals the starting volume minus the volume of ice removed. For draining, the final volume equals the volume of beer drained directly.
