This calculator predicts the International Bitterness Units (IBUs) of your homebrew beer based on hop additions, boil parameters, and gravity. IBUs quantify the bitterness contributed by hops during the boil. The calculator supports both the Tinseth and Rager formulas, the two most widely used methods for estimating hop bitterness in homebrewing. Select whichever formula matches your brewing software or personal preference for consistent recipe design.
- Select your unit system using the US (Gallons / Ounces) or Metric (Liters / Grams) radio buttons at the top of the form.
- Enter your Pre-Boil Volume and Post-Boil Volume. For a typical 5.5 gallon all-grain batch, a pre-boil volume of 7 gallons is common. For extract brewing, 3 gallons is typical.
- Enter your Target Original Gravity (OG) in the 1.xxx format (for example, 1.050). The calculator uses this along with the boil and post-boil volumes to estimate the actual boil gravity.
- Choose your preferred IBU Formula. Tinseth is the default and is widely used in modern brewing software. Rager uses a utilization lookup table and gravity adjustment factor.
- Add hops additions by clicking the Add Hop button. For each addition, enter the hop name (optional), weight, alpha acid percentage (found on hop packaging), boil time in minutes, and hop type (Whole or Pellet). Pellet hops receive a 10% utilization bonus.
- The calculator supports fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (1 1/2), and decimal input in all numeric fields.

The Tinseth formula calculates utilization from a bigness factor (1.65 x 0.000125^(BG - 1)) and a boil time factor ((1 - e^(-0.04 x time)) / 4.15). IBU per addition equals (alpha acid / 100 x amount in ounces x 7490) / post-boil gallons x utilization. The Rager formula uses a utilization lookup table indexed by boil time and applies a gravity adjustment when boil gravity exceeds 1.050.
Predicting hop bitterness is essential for designing balanced beer recipes. Whether you are brewing a light lager with 10 IBUs or a hop-forward IPA pushing past 70 IBUs, knowing your expected bitterness before brew day prevents costly surprises.
