Final Grade Calculator

A final grade calculator works in two directions: it finds the minimum score needed on a final exam to reach a target course grade, or it projects the overall course grade from a known or expected final exam score. The two modes cover the two most common academic planning questions, one working backward from a goal and one working forward from a result.

Current grade is the weighted course average before the final exam, and accepts decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers. Final exam weight is the percentage the final counts toward the total course grade; a value of 30 means the final is worth 30 percent of the overall grade, and a syllabus states the exact figure. In need mode, desired course grade is the minimum overall grade a student wants to finish with, so entering 90 targets an A-minus or higher on a standard scale. In predict mode, final exam score is the grade already received or expected on the final.

Need mode: needed score equals desired grade minus current grade times one minus final weight divided by 100, all divided by final weight divided by 100. Predict mode: final course grade equals current grade times one minus final weight divided by 100, plus final exam score times final weight divided by 100. Both use the standard weighted-average model, and the result carries a letter-grade equivalent on a standard scale.

A student has an 85 percent current grade with the final exam weighted at 40 percent of the course grade, and wants to finish with a 90. Needed score = (90 - 85 x (1 - 0.40)) / 0.40 = (90 - 85 x 0.60) / 0.40 = (90 - 51) / 0.40 = 39 / 0.40 = 97.5. A 97.5 on the final produces exactly a 90 course average; anything higher improves on it, and anything lower falls short.
