Sales Tax Calculator

Three-way sales tax solver: enter any two of before-tax price, sales tax rate, and after-tax price, and the third is computed from the standard formulas. Tax rate accepts either percentage (7.5%) or decimal (0.075); currency symbols, commas, and percent signs are stripped before calculation. Reports all four figures (before-tax, rate, tax amount, and after-tax) rounded to two decimal places for display.

Documentation

The sales tax calculator solves for any one of three values, before-tax price, sales tax rate, or after-tax price, from the other two. The same relationship covers shopping, invoicing, and tax compliance calculations alike.

  • Before Tax Price and Sales Tax Rate together give the After Tax Price.
  • After Tax Price and Sales Tax Rate together give the Before Tax Price, the reverse sales tax calculation.
  • Before Tax Price and After Tax Price together give the Sales Tax Rate.

Dollar amounts accept a leading dollar sign or none. Tax rates accept a percentage or a decimal, and simple fractions work as well. Editing any field recalculates the result automatically.

Formulas used

  • After Tax Price = Before Tax Price × (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100)
  • Before Tax Price = After Tax Price ÷ (1 + Tax Rate ÷ 100)
  • Sales Tax Rate = ((After Tax Price − Before Tax Price) ÷ Before Tax Price) × 100

Verifying taxes, setting correct prices, and documenting totals all reduce to the same before-tax, after-tax, and rate relationship, whether the transaction is a retail purchase, a wholesale invoice, or an online order.

  • Confirm total cost at checkout by calculating after-tax price from a listed price and tax rate.
  • Reverse sales tax on receipts to recover the before-tax price for reimbursements or expense reports.
  • Build tax-inclusive price lists by converting base prices to final prices for each tax jurisdiction.
  • Validate invoices by comparing stated tax amounts with computed figures for audit readiness.
  • Estimate cross-state or provincial purchases by testing different sales tax rates.
  • Prepare ecommerce pricing by comparing tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive price displays.

Each calculation returns four figures: Before Tax Price, Sales Tax Rate, Sales Tax Amount, and After Tax Price. The tax amount shows how much of the total goes to tax. Before-tax and after-tax prices together support comparing offers or setting a price. The displayed tax rate confirms which jurisdiction's rate was actually applied.

A $100 purchase at a 7.5 percent rate gives a $7.50 sales tax amount and a $107.50 after-tax price. A receipt showing $215.90 paid at 8.25 percent reverses to a $199.45 before-tax price and a $16.45 tax amount. Setting a target shelf price works the same way in reverse: a desired after-tax price and a local tax rate solve for the required before-tax price.

What is a sales tax calculator? A sales tax calculator computes the tax amount and the total price from an item price and a tax rate. It can also reverse sales tax to find the price before tax or to infer the tax rate from two known values.

How precise are the results? The tool uses standard sales tax formulas and formats currency to two decimals for display while keeping precise internal calculations. Results match typical point of sale rounding in most cases.

Can I enter percentages or decimals? Yes. A rate of 7.5 percent works as "7.5%" or "0.075," interpreted correctly either way. Dollar amounts work with or without a dollar sign.

Does this handle different regions? Yes. Any tax rate models a state, provincial, or local tax. The current rate for a given location is still worth verifying against an official source.
