Morphological Matrix Builder
Morphological analysis matrix where each row defines a parameter and each cell lists one option. The Cartesian product across rows enumerates the full solution space; rows can be grouped, hidden, drag-reordered, or filtered, and entire matrices import and export as JSON, CSV, or XLSX. Four bundled presets cover Product Design, Remote Work Policy, Smart City Infrastructure, and Business Model Generator.
Everything you enter is processed on your device. This tool loads a code library from cdnjs.cloudflare.com, which sees your IP address but never what you type.
Documentation
The Morphological Matrix Builder applies morphological analysis, a method for structuring a complex problem into independent dimensions and then combining every option across them. Each row represents a dimension or parameter of the problem, such as Power Source, Material, or User Type. Each column holds one candidate option within that dimension, such as Solar, Metal, or Adult. Filling the grid with candidate options defines a design space, and the tool enumerates that space to generate every full combination of choices, one from each dimension.
A preset (Product Design, Remote Work Policy, Smart City Infrastructure, or Business Model Generator) loads a working matrix as a starting layout, or a matrix can be built from a chosen number of rows and columns. Row headers name the dimensions and column headers label the option slots; cells hold the candidate options themselves, including pasted links, which render as clickable references. Rows can be assigned to groups and filtered to a single group at a time, useful for focusing a workshop on one part of the problem without deleting the rest of the matrix. Rows and columns can also be hidden individually to build a scoped view, and column or row order changes by dragging the header. A matrix saves locally, exports to JSON for backup or sharing, and imports from JSON, CSV, or XLSX, where the first column supplies the row headers and the first row supplies the column headers.
The number of possible combinations is the product, across every visible row, of the number of visible, non-empty options in that row; if any visible row has no visible options, the total is zero. Combinations are generated by depth-first enumeration across the rows, building one complete option set per pass. When a group filter is active, only the rows in that group count toward this product, so narrowing the matrix to a group also narrows the combination count to that subset. The full combination set, or only the currently visible subset, exports as JSON or CSV for downstream analysis.
Morphological analysis generalizes to any field that benefits from structured exploration of diverse options. Breaking a problem into dimensions and recombining the options surfaces choices that ad hoc brainstorming misses, in domains well beyond product design or policy planning.
- Event Planning and Logistics: Map out venue types, catering styles, entertainment formats, and guest engagement activities to generate complete event scenarios that balance budget and impact.
- Creative Writing and Storytelling: Combine genres, character archetypes, settings, and conflict types to outline unique story ideas or worldbuilding options for novels, screenplays, or video games.
- Culinary Innovation: Cross-reference cuisines, cooking techniques, ingredients, and presentation styles to develop new recipe concepts or menu experiments for restaurants and food startups.
- Marketing Campaign Design: Explore audiences, messaging angles, distribution channels, and call-to-action formats to create campaign blueprints tailored for reach and conversion.
- Personal Productivity Systems: Test combinations of time management methods, task tools, focus techniques, and reward systems to design a productivity strategy aligned with personal habits.
- Sustainability Strategies: Align waste reduction methods, sourcing practices, packaging materials, and logistics choices to model eco-friendly solutions for supply chains.
- Health and Wellness Programs: Create combinations of exercise routines, nutrition approaches, mental health practices, and accountability systems to shape balanced lifestyle plans.
- Art and Design Exploration: Pair mediums, color palettes, textures, and themes to inspire new artistic projects or design directions without relying on trial and error alone.
These applications extend the matrix past technical and business scenarios: reframing a challenge into dimensions and options generates combinations that a single linear brainstorm rarely reaches.
