Sports Tools

Sports tools for the arithmetic that settles what a performance actually was: on-base percentage, slugging and OPS from a hit breakdown, a golf handicap index averaged from score differentials under the World Handicap System count table, and bicycle gear ratio, gear inches, development per crank revolution and road speed at a chosen cadence. These are published formulas rather than opinions, and the value is applying them consistently across a season of box scores or a drivetrain's worth of gear combinations. The detail that trips people up is which events belong in a denominator: a sacrifice fly counts against on-base percentage but not against batting average or slugging, so the three figures move independently and a player can gain in one while losing another. If you are new to the category, start with the batting tools if you are reading a box score, the handicap tools before entering a competition, and the drivetrain tools when choosing a chainring or cog, where wheel diameter comes from the bead seat diameter plus twice the tire width rather than the marketing size printed on the sidewall. None of this replaces an official ruling; soft and hard caps, for one, are left out of the handicap figure.
