Word and Character Count Toolv1.0.0
Counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and average word length from any pasted or typed text. Reading-time and speaking-time estimates derive from configurable speeds (defaults 238 wpm for reading, 150 wpm for speaking), and sentences are detected by sentence-ending punctuation while paragraphs split on blank lines. Statistics update on every keystroke, with text and settings persisted to local storage between sessions.
Documentation
Analyze your text instantly with counts of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, average word length, and estimated reading and speaking time. Type or paste your content into the Text area and see results update automatically. Click the Count button to trigger the analysis manually.
- Enter or paste your text into the Text field. The tool accepts any length of content, from a single word to entire articles or documents.
- View real-time statistics in the Results section. Word count splits text on whitespace boundaries. Character counts are provided both with and without spaces so you can check limits for platforms like Twitter, meta descriptions, or SMS messages.
- Sentence count is determined by counting sentence-ending punctuation marks (periods, exclamation points, and question marks). Paragraph count is determined by splitting on blank lines.
- Adjust the Reading speed and Speaking speed in the Settings panel to match your preference. The defaults are 238 words per minute for reading (average adult) and 150 words per minute for speaking (conversational pace).
- Click Reset to clear all text and restore default settings. Your text and settings are saved automatically in your browser, so you can close the tab and return later without losing your work.
- Share a pre-filled version of the tool by adding query parameters to the URL. Use ?t=your+text to pre-populate the text area, ?rs=250 for reading speed, and ?ss=130 for speaking speed.
Knowing exact word and character counts helps writers, marketers, students, and developers meet length requirements and optimize content across many different contexts.
- Content Writing: Check blog post length against SEO guidelines. Many SEO experts recommend articles of 1,500 to 2,500 words for competitive search rankings. Paste your draft and confirm you meet the target before publishing.
- Social Media: Verify character counts for platforms with strict limits. Twitter posts are limited to 280 characters, Instagram captions to 2,200 characters, and LinkedIn posts to 3,000 characters. Use the characters-without-spaces count to check hashtag-dense posts.
- Academic Writing: Confirm essays and research papers meet word count requirements. Many assignments specify a range such as 2,000 to 3,000 words. The paragraph count helps you assess structure and organization at a glance.
- SEO Metadata: Optimize meta descriptions (typically 150 to 160 characters) and title tags (50 to 60 characters). Paste your metadata text and verify the character count fits within search engine display limits.
- Public Speaking: Estimate how long a speech or presentation will take. Paste your script, adjust the speaking speed to match your delivery pace, and check the estimated speaking time to stay within your allotted slot.
- Translation and Localization: Provide accurate word counts to translation agencies that charge per word. The precise count avoids disputes and helps budget translation projects accurately.
- Email Marketing: Craft subject lines within the recommended 40 to 60 character range and preview text within 90 to 100 characters. Check body copy length to ensure emails remain scannable and concise.
