Word Counter

The word counter measures a passage across six metrics at once: word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, readability, and estimated reading time, updating automatically as text changes. Settings expose optional features for editing, formatting, and tracking writing goals.

Word count comes from splitting text on visible whitespace. Sentence count comes from locating sentence-ending punctuation marks: period, question mark, and exclamation point. Paragraph count comes from blank lines. Readability uses the Flesch Reading Score: 206.835 minus 1.015 times (words ÷ sentences) minus 84.6 times (syllables ÷ words). Reading time uses minutes = ceil(words ÷ 200). Character count without spaces is tracked separately for platforms that set strict limits.

• A Clean Text option removes extra line breaks, normalizes spaces, and replaces problem characters before counting.
• Text can convert to upper case, lower case, sentence case, or title case without leaving the tool, or stay unchanged.
• Output Settings toggles which extra metrics display: character count without spaces, sentence count, paragraph count, Flesch Reading Score, and reading time.
• A goal set in words or characters tracks progress against a target as the count updates.
• Timed Writing runs a countdown of a chosen length for a distraction-free drafting session.
• A .txt file can be imported for analysis or exported to save a snapshot of the current text.

A 400-word draft split across 20 sentences averages 20 words per sentence. At roughly 500 syllables total, that works out to 1.25 syllables per word. The Flesch Reading Score comes to 206.835 minus 1.015 times 20 (20.3) minus 84.6 times 1.25 (105.75), or 80.8. Reading time comes to ceil(400 ÷ 200), or 2 minutes.
