Volume Converter
Convert between 47 volume units including liters, gallons, cups, barrels, and cubic measurements with fraction and mixed number support. The converter covers US customary, UK imperial, metric, and dry volume systems with precise conversion factors through liters as the base unit.
This tool sends nothing over the network. Everything you enter is processed on your device and never reaches our servers.
Documentation
The volume converter switches a value between 44 volume and capacity units across US customary, UK imperial, metric, and dry measurement systems: metric (liters, milliliters, centiliters, kiloliters, microliters, metric cups, metric tablespoons, metric teaspoons), US customary (US cups, US ounces, US tablespoons, US teaspoons, US gills, US liquid gallons, US liquid quarts, US liquid pints), US dry (US dry gallons, US dry quarts, US dry pints, US dry barrels), UK imperial (UK gallons, UK quarts, UK pints, UK ounces, UK gills, UK tablespoons, UK teaspoons, UK barrels), cubic (cubic millimeters, cubic centimeters, cubic inches, cubic feet, cubic meters, cubic yards), and barrel types (US oil barrels, US liquid barrels, US federal barrels).
- Values accept whole numbers (500), decimals (3.785), fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (5 1/16 or 1-3/8), and scientific notation (1.5e3).
- The result is computed from the conversion ratio between the two selected units, with an optional step-by-step view that shows that ratio and the substituted arithmetic.
- A swap control reverses the source and target units without re-selecting either one, useful when a recipe or specification is given in the opposite direction from what is on hand.
- Settings holds the display precision, from 2 to 10 decimal places.
A US liquid gallon is defined as exactly 3.785411784 liters. Converting 500 milliliters (0.5 liters) to US liquid gallons: 0.5 / 3.785411784 = approximately 0.132 gallons, a common check when a recipe or product label mixes metric and US customary volumes. The UK gallon runs larger still, at exactly 4.54609 liters, so a US gallon and a UK gallon are not interchangeable even though both are called "gallon". Cubic measurements convert the same way: 1 cubic foot equals about 7.48 US gallons (28.3168 liters), a figure commonly used to size water tanks or estimate pool volume from linear dimensions.
Volume conversion is essential across cooking, science, engineering, and international trade. This converter handles all common volume scales in a single interface, eliminating the need to remember conversion factors or search for separate tools.
- Cooking and Baking: Convert between cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, milliliters, and liters when following recipes from different countries or scaling ingredient quantities up or down for larger or smaller batches.
- Brewing: Convert between gallons, liters, barrels, and quarts when scaling recipes, measuring fermentation volumes, or comparing equipment capacities across US and UK measurement standards.
- Chemistry: Convert between liters, milliliters, microliters, and cubic centimeters when preparing solutions, recording experimental measurements, or comparing published data that uses different unit conventions across international journals.
- Construction: Convert between cubic feet, cubic meters, cubic yards, and liters when estimating material volumes for concrete, excavation, fill, or water storage tank capacities.
- Petroleum: Convert between US oil barrels, US liquid barrels, US federal barrels, liters, and gallons when tracking production volumes, calculating storage requirements, or comparing regulatory measurements across different barrel definitions.
- International Trade: Convert between US gallons, UK gallons, liters, and cubic meters when reconciling shipping documents, customs declarations, and product specifications that use different regional measurement standards.
- Agriculture: Convert between gallons, liters, and cubic meters when calculating irrigation volumes, mixing pesticide or fertilizer solutions, or measuring grain storage capacities using dry volume units.
- Laboratory: Convert between milliliters, liters, teaspoons, tablespoons, and ounces when a protocol, recipe, or product label mixes metric and US customary volumes.
