AOV Calculator - Average Order Value Calculator
Divides total revenue by number of orders to produce the average order value (AOV). Both inputs accept whole numbers, decimals, fractions like 3/4, and mixed numbers like 5 1/2, with currency symbols and commas stripped automatically. The currency symbol on the output is configurable, and an optional step-by-step view shows the AOV = revenue / orders substitution.

Documentation
Average order value, or AOV, is total revenue divided by the number of orders over the same period. It measures the typical revenue per transaction, and tracking it over time reveals customer spending trends, the impact of promotions, and progress toward realistic revenue targets.
Total Revenue and Number of Orders both accept whole numbers, decimals, fractions such as 3/4, and mixed numbers such as 5 1/2; currency symbols and commas are stripped automatically. The output currency symbol is configurable, and a step-by-step view shows the substitution: AOV = Total Revenue / Number of Orders.
$15,000 in revenue from 300 orders gives an average order value of $15,000 / 300 = $50.00. Monitoring this figure weekly or monthly shows whether upselling, bundles, or free-shipping thresholds are moving the needle.
AOV alone does not indicate business health. A retailer that raises prices to lift AOV while losing half its buyers records a higher average order value on a shrinking business, so the figure is only trustworthy read alongside order count and total revenue. A subscription business dividing monthly recurring revenue by active subscriber count is computing an AOV proxy rather than the per-transaction figure a one-time retailer tracks, which matters when comparing the number across business models.
Apply average order value across industries and business models. Online stores, subscription services, and brick-and-mortar shops use AOV to guide pricing, marketing spend, and inventory planning.
- E-commerce: AOV before and after launching a product bundle shows whether customers spend more per transaction; comparing last month's revenue and order count against this month's reveals the difference.
- Marketing: the maximum cost per acquisition follows from AOV divided by the target profit margin; an AOV of $80 with a 40% margin gives a break-even CPA of $32.
- Retail: AOV compared across store locations identifies branches that drive higher-value transactions, worth replicating through merchandising strategy.
- Subscription Services: effective AOV, monthly recurring revenue divided by active subscribers, benchmarks against industry averages for expansion planning.
- Financial Reporting: AOV alongside conversion rate and customer lifetime value gives stakeholders a complete view of revenue health in quarterly dashboards.
- Promotions: the lift from a free-shipping threshold shows in AOV during the promotional window against a baseline period; a rise from $45 to $62 after setting a $50 minimum confirms the strategy works.
- Product Pricing: a price increase on bestselling items either raises AOV without reducing order volume or it does not; revenue and orders for the control and test periods quantify the net effect.
- Wholesale and B2B: AOV compared between retail and wholesale channels sets minimum order quantities, sales rep coverage, and which segment carries the strongest gross margin per transaction.
- Cohort Analysis: AOV per cohort, segmented by acquisition channel, geography, or signup month, shows which audiences spend the most and where to adjust acquisition spend.
Combine AOV with related metrics for a fuller picture. Pair it with conversion rate to estimate revenue per visitor, with customer lifetime value to project long-term profitability, and with return rate to verify that headline AOV gains are not eroded by refunds. Recalculate after every significant pricing change, promotion, or product launch so the figure stays current.
