CPM Calculator

Calculate cost per mille, total ad spend, or impressions using the standard CPM formula for digital advertising. Solve in any direction by entering two known values; the calculator derives the third and displays a step-by-step formula breakdown with configurable decimal precision and currency symbols.

CPM, Cost Per Mille, from the Latin word for one thousand, measures the cost of reaching one thousand impressions in a digital advertising campaign. It is one of the most common yardsticks for comparing ad pricing, since it reduces campaigns of very different scale to the same unit: cost per thousand views.

The core formula is CPM = (Total Cost / Total Impressions) x 1000. The same relationship rearranges to solve for either of the other two values: Total Cost = (CPM x Total Impressions) / 1000, or Total Impressions = (Total Cost / CPM) x 1000. Which two fields need filling in depends on which value is being solved for.

Total Campaign Cost and Total Impressions, or whichever two values the chosen solve direction requires, accept fractions such as 3/4, mixed numbers such as 5 1/2, decimals, and scientific notation; dollar signs and commas in cost values are stripped automatically.

A $2,400 campaign delivering 800,000 impressions has a CPM of (2,400 / 800,000) x 1000 = $3.00. At that same $3.00 CPM, a $10,000 budget would be expected to deliver (10,000 / 3.00) x 1000, or approximately 3,333,333 impressions.

Settings holds the number of decimal places, the currency symbol, and a detailed step-by-step derivation showing the formula with the entered values substituted in.

A lower CPM means a cheaper cost per thousand impressions, but CPM alone says nothing about whether those impressions convert; a cheap CPM against an audience that never clicks or buys is less useful than a higher CPM against a more relevant one. Effective CPM, or eCPM, is the same formula run after the fact on actual delivered impressions and actual spend, and it can differ from the CPM a campaign was booked at if delivery under- or over-shoots the plan.

Evaluate advertising efficiency across platforms, campaigns, and formats by calculating the cost to reach one thousand viewers or listeners. CPM is one of the most widely used benchmarks in digital advertising and media planning.

  • Display Advertising: a banner ad campaign's cost per thousand impressions on a website or ad network compares vendor pricing directly.
  • Social Media Campaigns: CPM for Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok ad campaigns measures cost efficiency against industry benchmarks.
  • Programmatic Buying: a target CPM and desired impression volume together estimate the total budget a programmatic campaign needs.
  • Video Advertising: pre-roll or mid-roll video ad costs on YouTube or streaming platforms compare across placements by CPM rate.
  • Publisher Revenue: page views entered as impressions against the average CPM rate from ad networks estimate ad revenue for a website.
  • Media Planning: CPM rates across search, display, social, and video channels compare to allocate budget to the most efficient medium.
  • Campaign Reporting: effective CPM (eCPM) after a campaign concludes, computed from actual spend and delivered impressions, is the number a performance review relies on.
  • Podcast Advertising: cost per thousand downloads for a podcast sponsorship compares against other audio advertising options.
  • Email Marketing: the CPM equivalent of an email campaign, with total sends treated as impressions, divides the campaign cost accordingly.
